Disappointing RPG for those that enjoy immersing storylines.

I had high expectations for an RPG by Squaresoft from 1998. This era seemed to be their golden age when it came to RPGs. Unique gameplay, epic quests, immersing stories. I had been used to the Final Fantasy series, and others like Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Even other companies produced wonderful RPGs with great stories like Legend of Dragoon. This is what I was hoping for when I bought Saga Frontier. The premise seemed amazing, with 7 different characters, each with their own story.

The trouble is, there's hardly any story! I played through as Blue first, and there's literally maybe one or two paragraphs of story driven dialogue the entire game!!! I was shocked! Emelia had a more engaging plot, but it was still very, very weak.

Music and graphics wise, the game is pretty weak. The pre-rendered backgrounds were nothing special. It was confusing to locate the multiple exits on any given screen. Sometimes you had to luckily, blindly stumble upon the exit to figure out where you have to go.

The gameplay is fun. Battling is basically everything in Saga Frontier, and it is at least fun to do. The game requires quite a bit of grinding, but I didn't find myself minding to do it.

I did find myself wanting to beat the game as quickly as I could through 2 of the 7 scenarios, so it felt like I got my money's worth before moving on to a better game.

If you can find this game for $10, it would be worth the buy just to experience it, but it certainly isn't worth much more than that.

Best RPG Ever

This game is my favorite RPG, and in my opinion the best out there. All of the sprites are hard painted, the combat system is unique and engaging, as is the entire game. In the beginning you can choose 1 of 7 characters to play. The other characters may or may not be available later on. There are a ton of characters that may join you, and most are up to you to find and persuade to join your party.

My favorite bit is that the moves in combat are learned after practicing similar moves. For example, if you use slash (which a character that has equipped a slashing weapon will have) enough times, you may learn stab or something. If you have a character with two swords he may learn double slash, and after using it enough may then learn cross slash. There is no map of what leads to what (in the game anyway) and I think there is a bit of randomness to it also. I'm sure the net has all of the info detailed on a wiki somewhere, but that would ruin some of the experience in my opinion.

As a note, Saga Frontier 2 is very similar but is less good. The game after it is Unlimited Saga... just forget it exists. Unlimited Saga is the worst game ever, and although it keeps the hand painted sprites and battle system from the other two, you should read reviews on it specifically before getting it. Saga Frontier however is worth every penny and a great game even when compared to current RPGs.

Rewarding but frustrating, over looked old school squaresoft rpg.

Bought this as a replacement that I had from 98' Overlooked RPG series from Japan. By the same company, Squaresoft, that brought games like Final Fantasy Series, Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger. Turn based battle system, but you do not gain levels or experience just get better at what you do ex use your fist will result in a possible strength or hit point increase, all gains are random, including skills. Story is nonlinear as you can pick from 5 different main characters, some are human, half mystic, monster and a mec.Multiple characters are recruitable throughout the story lines. Game can be frustrating at times since monster grow stronger as you do. Replay value is very high. I think it's one of the best sprite based rpgs ever.Newbies might be frustrated with the stat gain system, but i think it is very well thought out and implemented. Once you get the hang of it, try Lute's or Blue's story first as they are pretty open as far as exploration and Blue is pretty powerful at the beginning. Stick with it and it is a very rewarding and refreshing old school rpg. They don't make them like this anymore.Read full review...

Excellent nostalgia trip and great for people who never played it, too.

This is a fantastic rpg from back in the day. Nostalgia abounds with the isometric camera, pre-rendered backgrounds and sprites.

The gameplay consists of marching your characters around various locations like derelict towns, cities, prisons, high tech futuristic airships, and even places that are wild or magical. The cast of characters is colorful and there are seven differant campaign paths to choose from, each one focusing on a particular main character's storyline.

The combat in this game is differant from a lot of turn based RPGs. It resembles Lunar somewhat, in that your formations are important to determining who can attack what and when. Characters do not level up to gain stats, but instead are constantly leveling up and gaining attributes after each and every battle instead of meeting an arbitrary EXP threshhold to increase their abilities. Even in the midst of battle, a character can learn a new move and display it in dazzling fashion.

The visuals and soundtrack are classic, with some very memorable and enjoyable tunes. The graphics wont hurt your eyes. There are some truly inspired locations and the character design is very nice.

I highly reccomend getting a copy of this game and playing it, whether you miss it or never got a chance to play it when it was new.
