Take a Chance
If you're a 60s fan, you're probably familiar with Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band and what many call the band's masterpiece, Trout Mask Replica. You might well ask then why I didn't listen to it instead of Safe As Milk. Truth be told, years ago I did listen to it. Trout Mask, however, so bewildered and annoyed me that I dumped it from my collection—and as a collector I seldom get rid of anything. (Who knows, listening to it again at this juncture in my life might prove enlightening.)
So? So if you wish to explore the Captain, I'd suggest starting with Safe As Milk and its mélange of pop, blues, soul and the experimental. The music is exciting enough to be cool and weird enough to be fun. In the end, I found myself enjoying the CD, especially poppier songs like "Sure 'N Yes I Do," "Zig Zag Wander," "Dropout Boogie," "I'm So Glad" and "Yellow Brick Road." Even the weirder stuff—"Electricity," "Abba Zaba" and "Safe As Milk," for example—have a certain attraction as do the instrumentals: "On Tomorrow," "Big Black Baby Shoes," "Flower Pot" and "Dirty Blue Gene."
A couple of notes: Ry Cooder's guitar work is awesome. "Zig Zag Wanderer" can be found on Where the Action Is: Los Angeles Nuggets, 1965-1968, Vol. I. To the original 12 songs on the album 7 bonus tracks have been added.
Take a chance and give Safe As Milk a spin.
