Sea Battle Intellivision War Simulation Strategy Naval

I like that Sea Battle by Intellivision, transported me, drew me in, took me to a world of strategy other than my daily catch-as-catch-can-world. The ratings of speed--half and full...terms like deploy and recall, played into my understanding of that aspect of War. I liked that I felt like I was there without actually having to be there. The sounds were a great addition. The controls seemed reasonable and were quite functional. The look of the overlays was appealing. It was easy to insert the cartridge and start the game. I enjoy even thinking about playing this game more than twenty years later.

As I am writing this I hear in my mind the ping ...Ping...of hunting by submarine. The feeling of granting my fleet needed time to make it to the enemy harbor to claim it for our country. Alternating between the sets of fleet ships and the submarines, you set things in motion. Manage your time, get back to redirect or guide your fleet ships as you deem necessary. But most outstanding is the submarine play. Dive or rise, position yourself in wait. Enough above the water to see and fire. Low enough in the water to be hard to see. Can you dive fast enough to avoid gun fire? can you outrun on the surface. Did you expect that ship to break-away from the convoy? Can you stay silent long enough for them to stop depth charges? I would sit for long seconds and minutes as I got over taken and submerged to play a waiting game. How savvy is their weapons mate. I'm here but the charges are in the distance; smug and happy. The depth charges are exploding right outside the periscope. The shaking on the screen is directly proportional to the closeness of the explosion. A long second is a thirty second to sixty second moment. A moment while you are startled by a close explosion and you are waiting for two things in this moment. You are waiting for the next depth charge. Or you are waiting for the hull integrity to fail. Pinging and engine swoosh that varies with speed added to my appreciation of this game...Game?
