Solid, reliable replacement for any failed OEM laptop drive.

Seagate is a well-respected manufacturer of both OEM and replacement SATA drives for many laptop computers, not just the older ones using, e.g., 5400 RPM drives. In this particular instance, I bought this 80GB drive to replace a 40GB drive in an old Compaq Presario, and that drive was a replacement of the original drive, which was a 20GB drive. Once properly installed and formatted, the hard drive becomes the primary data storage workhorse of all computers.

With daily use, you can usually expect the HD in any laptop to last about 3 years ... the lighter your use of the laptop, the longer the drive will last. Drive longevity also depends on how drive-intensive your programs/uses are. If your programs don't require heavy drive activity, your drive will last longer. Also, if you regularly "defragment" the drive (a process by which information stored on the recording disks within the drive is physically moved and re-organized, to make it easier for the drive mechanisms to access it), the drive won't have to work as hard accessing program data, and it will last longer.

Once upon a time these drives were very expensive to replace, but mass production of them has now become so widespread in "cheap labor" countries like China that that we can now buy quality replacements for even the most modern drives for a relatively modest cost. Replacement cost is even lower if you learn how to replace the drive yourself.

I say ... go for it! Back up all your important data; figure out the maximum storage and drive speed your computer can handle; find and get the appropriate replacement drive, and install it yourself. It's easy ... and fun!Read full review...
