A true classic movie. A great addition to my collection to watch over and over again.

After going on a Jane Austen binge a few years ago I read everything she had published I fell in love with her novels and have always liked the movies made from her books. This movie is a great example. It arrived in great condition and on time. Read full review...

Well Worth Watching

Films of this genre are not usually of interest to me. I first found this film as a VHS tape super cheap at a yard sale. Because several of the actors involved were actors I'd enjoyed in other movies, I thought I'd pick it up to check out, not expecting I'd enjoy it all that much. To my surprise, this version of Sense & Sensibility was very nicely done. All the characters were well developed & well acted, and the story was told without a hint of melodrama- good storytelling with solid performances. I enjoyed it enough that I decided I'd add it to my dvd movie collection.Read full review...

SENSE AND SENSIBILTY JANE AUSTIN DVD, MOVIE

Sadly, I missed the second half of the recent (and most wonderful) PBS adaptation of this timeless classic. I was desperate to know how the story ends because I have never read the novel. I turned to my trusted Ebay and was not disappointed. I found and purchased this DVD (a SUPER DEAL) after finding it not available at the video store. The cast and acting is superb! The scenery made me homesick for the UK where I lived and worked more than 17 years. Emma Thompson's script was perfect in detail, costume and story telling. I am sorry I never read Austin because, as with Shakespeare, it is amazing how humans evolve in the world of technology and in some social ways (for good or ill). However, in other important human ways nothing changes thrugh the ages, such as our deep seated human emotions of love, longing and loss! This is a superb movie, have watched it twice already to take in the details again the second time around. It is a true shame to refer to it as a "Chick Flick" when the observations of love, longing and loss are universal between men and women and so timeless too. This is an extremely literate and entertaining exploration of human emotion. Enjoy!Read full review...

Great fun: A Wonderful Adaptation of the Jane Austen Novel

Directed by Ang Lee, this fabulous 1995 movie is a wonderful adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel. Emma Thompson stars as Elinor Dashwood who is very close to her younger sister Marianne (Kate Kinslet). The movie tracks their two separate love affairs.

But first, the two sisters experience near poverty when their father dies and leaves according to British law most of the family assets to their brother and his homely wife Fanny (Harriet Wather).

Elinor falls in love with the tongue-tied and very shy brother of Fanny, Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant), who comes to visit his sister. But beware: Edward has a secret. He has been secretly engaged for a long time to another woman.

Marianne has two boyfriends. Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman) is an older country gentlemen who has a checkered past. He is far overshadowed by the younger, very attractive John Willoughby (Greg Wise) who swoops in to save Marianne when she sprains her ankle in a meadow during a rainstorm. John does not have much money, but his knowledge of Shakespearian sonnets and culture bewitches Marianne. Yet, Colonel Brandon never gives up.

Emma Thompson made Oscar history when she won Best Screenplay for this movie. Already having won Best Actress for Howard's End, she became the only Best Actress to win Best Screen play. And it is largely due to this wonderful screenplay that this movie came to be done.

Nominated for 6 other Oscars, the movie won none. But its subtle humor makes for wonderful viewing and good fun. You will be thoroughly entertained.
