Pure escapist lunacy

Somehow my disk of this movie was misplaced (I'm blaming the kids who take movies over to other kids' houses to play) so I only had the case and not the disk itself. I missed watching this movie, so seeing a disk-only offer was a no-brainer for me.

The movie itself is a romp. While it is easy to pass this off as just another zombie movie, it is a quantum above (and probably inspired) similar films of ordinary folks against the undead. It is funny, tongue-in-cheek, while still addressing issues of relationships - with a girlfriend, best friend, mother, step-father, and favorite bar.

I am frightened by "real" horror films and don't watch them, but this doesn't fall into that category. The violence is so over-the-top and cartoonish as to be laugh-inducing rather than distressful. The interplay between the escaping characters is warm and genuine, even while the entire premise must be suspended in order to settle in.

I hate zombie movies generally, but this one is terrific

Imagine the TV series "Friends" in London being attacked by a rampaging mob of "The Undead" but few of our heroes seem to be seriously harmed. That's not quite true. Imagine a bunch of youngish slackers trying to figure out life, relationships and careers. Toss in the Zombie Apocalypse and a well written, witty British script, and you have "Shaun of the Dead." It's one of my favorite recent comedies, and be watched multiple times, just as the slackers in the movie would, too. Read full review...

shaun

Edgar Wright's horror-comedy film, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, follows the title character (Simon Pegg) through his mundane life in London. Joined by his immature and ever-present roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun excels at nothing except drinking pints of ale and watching television, which causes friction with his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield). Before Shaun can save his relationship, however, he's got to fend off a horde of zombies that are slowly taking over the city. Armed with a cricket bat and a vague sense of direction, Shaun must rescue his friends and loved ones, and bring them to the only safe place he can think of--the pub. Cowritten by Wright and Pegg, SHAUN OF THE DEAD succeeds remarkably well at combining droll British humor with good, old-fashioned zombie cinema. While the movie is often hilariously amusing, it takes its horror pedigree seriously, offering up moments of genuine suspense, and even a healthy dose of gore. Pegg is oddly charming as the put-upon lead slacker, and Frost is appropriately oafish, but the living dead themselves also take up a fair amount of screen time, shuffling and limping in their best Romero form. For lovers of zombie films and other chills-and-chuckles outings like EVIL DEAD II and DEAD ALIVE, SHAUN OF THE DEAD is an instant cult classic.Read full review...

The funniest spoof EVER!!!!!!

This is a GREAT movie...it makes me laugh every time and I'll never be able to listen to the Queen track "Don't Stop me Now" with a straight face ever again!
Lets be honest....horror movies, particularly anything that involves the presence of Zombies are usually more ridiculous than they are scary; so taking form this premise....Shaun of the Dead is a farcical play on recent horror offerings, particularly the 2004 release of a similar name " Dawn of the Dead" and 28 days later!
The setting is very British....our lead character Shaun is not a happy man, to say he was a little dissatisfied with his life would be a mammoth understatement...he works in an electrical shop, has just been dumped by his girlfriend and life is not really going anywhere...though he does have his one true joy in life; the local pub - Winchester Arms!!
He decides however, to take control of his life....in fact he is so busy, he fails to notice that Britain has been taken over by Zombies....who are out to kill the living and turn them into one of their own!! He is literally stepping over these characters in one scene until he realizes what is going on and enlists the help of his lazy roommate to attack them....with vinyl albums no less!!
The begins the escape....making sure that the ex girlfriend, her friend and his parents are along for the ride! There begins more ridiculous Zombie antics , and plans to attack....until they reach their destination...oh where could one be most safe from attack....why of course, the Winchester Arms...a familiar place with Beer to boot!! This is also the setting for the funniest scene in spoof history - and hence the reason that Queen song makes me laugh!! This is a crazy, imaginative, hilarious take on Zombie movies and should not be missed!!

Tongue-in-Cheek Take on the Zombie Movie Genre

As a horror movie lover, and especially a fan of the sub-genre that George Romero popularized, I must say that this is a fresh take on the typical zombie-movie story line. This is definitely a movie for the more, well-informed fan of the sub-genre. Those viewers with a pedestrian understanding and appreciation of this type of film would expect it to be an "either/or" proposition -- either a comedy flick or a horror film. "Shaun of the Dead" manages to simultaneously entertain and scare viewers with a familiar story line and a fair amount of self-reflexiveness. Much in the way "Evil Dead II" pokes fun at the genre, "Shaun of the Dead" makes slight nods to the zombie-film, while keeping the viewer immersed in the an artful blend of comedy and horror.Read full review...

Shaun of the Dead (2004, DVD)

Shaun of the Dead is a very scary and very fun at the same time! I didn´t like, funny horror movies at all like: Scary movies, any part. They was only fun and joking with all old classics!
Shaun of the Dead is more like Georg a Romero´s master pieces Dawn of the dead etc. This is ofcourse not like good as that, but is a movie very like that but, when the Zombies coming, they are scary as h... but, the hero in the movie killed them on all kind of funny ways. I usually dont like horror movies with jokes, they shall be only scary as h..., but this one is different. I want to recommend this to all wich like zombie movies, this is a Great movie, Thumbs up!

Apocalyptic Weapon of Choice: The Cricket Paddle...

Hearing that "Shaun of the Dead" is the most popular British zombie comedy of all time does give one pause, simply because you have to stop for a second and wonder as to whether you have simply missed other British zombie comedies or if you maybe took "28 Day Later" way too seriously. The thing is that when you hear "British zombie comedy" you are thinking "Monty Python's Flying Circus" or "Benny Hill" or "Black Adder" or "Asbolutely Fabulous" or "Coupling." You are not thinking something that is as restrained as what Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright have put together (the pair co-wrote the film, Pegg stars as Shaun and Wright directs), which is probably the biggest surprise of all.

"Shaun of the Dead" is only four star funny, but there is another dimension to the film beyond the humor. The tagline tries to tells us that this movie is: "A romantic comedy. With zombies." The really funny thing is that, underneath it all, it really is a romantic comedy. You know: boy meets girl, girl dumps boy, zombies try to kill boy and girl and mom and flat mates, boy tries to rescue girl and mom and flat mates, so on and so forth.

Actually the movie that that came to mind the most, despite the references to the great zombie movies of the past ("We're coming to get you, Barbara!"), was "Young Frankenstein," specifically in terms of the scenes that are played totally straight. There are scenes when Shaun deals with his girl, Liz (Kate Ashfield), his mom, Barbara (Penelope Wilton), and his best bud, Ed (Nick Frost) that are done like they were in a romantic comedy, and not an Adam Sandler "Water Boy" type romantic comedy, but an Adam Sandler "50 First Dates" type romantic comedy. Stripped of the zombies this is a rather pedestrian romantic comedy, but what makes it inspired lunacy is that it IS being done in the middle of a zombie movie.

Of the DVD extras the extended bits and outtakes in "MISSING BITS" are okay, but by favorite are the trio of "Plot Holes," where we get some insights into what we did not see in the movie from three of the principle characters. These are presented in comic book form as opposed to having actual footage, but that simply adds to their charm. There are better bits in "RAW MEAT," the highlight of which is the "pitch" by Pegg and Wright to sell the studio their movie idea. I already talked about the "TV BITS," and no one will be surprised that I the Zombie Trivia available via the ZOMB-O-METER. Overall, the DVD extras are well above average but not knock down dead, get up as a reanimated corpse and try to eat human flesh great.

This is to die for, then come back to life to see again

This movie takes a satirical look at the often copied zombie horror flick. The story is great as the most unlikely hero forms his own Scooby Doo like crew of other very unlikely heroes to save the world, well save themselves. This is a British comedy and if you are not a fan of the dry wit of the Brits, you will miss somethings in this movie. You will still get a lot of laughs from it, but there may be some small things you miss, still worth getting. The spoofs of the horror movie are slight and witty so the movie keeps the very horror film of the other zombie films, but has great comedic timing and is very well written. It is so fantastic I can describe it adequately.

When I first saw this movie, I went out immediately to return the DVD to the rental place and then bought one myself. Well I had to go to three stores first, but I finally found a copy for myself. You won't have such trouble now.

The outtakes are very funny. The commentary is very good and probably better than most I've watched on DVDs. The other special features are very good as well and most are very funny.
