Strangely engrossing game
I don't know what it is exactly but it is possible to kill a lot of time playing this thing without noticing how fast the time passes. The game is not as easy as it first looks so there is a definite challenge presented. On the other hand the game mechanics are pretty repetitive albeit the situations that develop are each unique. I bought it on a lark as it didn't cost much, had decent reviews online, and I was bored with Guild Wars 2. I wouldn't pay a lot for it but if you can get it cheap (mine was less than $20 new) it is an OK investment.Read full review

too big to process
fantastic idea, but couldn't get it to work in real time. too much data to process on my laptop, and I have a rather fast and large memory model. Maybe I was just spoiled by years of Evony online.

More culture, less war: the classic game gets more civilized
Great version of the classic game. As a player of previous versions, took a little getting used to the importance of accumulating culture and faith points. And boy: this game punishes you for conquering. You can still do so, but you definitely pay the price for occupying cities, so it requires more thought. Indeed, the game gives you a push to try for other victories (culture, science, diplomacy). It was frustrating at first to be punished for conquest, but I wound up appreciating that. Even the screaming sounds when you attack cities makes you feel ashamed of conquest. In sum, I appreciated the less warlike nature of this edition of Civ.Read full review

Great game, but a commitment
I liked the game, and it has lots of new features, and they have filled a lot of holes left by the previous versions. My only gripe might be that it has so many new features, that playing it can be a huge commitment.Read full review

Complete Edition worth the money
This is the first Civilization game I have played. The gameplay is very fun and addicting. The balance between culture, technology, war, and diplomacy with other nations makes for a wonderful game. I played this game without the DLC add-ons and it is still great but you lose out on the additional civilizations, buildings, and locations/map types. For the extra $5 to $10 I would highly recommend buying the Complete Edition.Read full review
