Fantastic Silent Hill Game

Although it is not as good as the first 4 games, it is still is one of the better western devoloved Silent Hill games. It has a good use of the motion controls on the wii and the story is very compelling, soundtrack is also amazing (which is something you must expect from Akira Yamaoka). Overall, as a fan of the original japanese devloped Silent Hill games, Silent Hill Shattered Memories is a good addition to the franshise.Read full review...

Enjoyable play, but didn't really meet expectations

This is the first and only Silent Hill game I have played, so I can't compare it to the other ones. However, judging from what I've heard and seen of the other SH games, this one is a little bit different.

GRAPHICS: 5/5
VOICE ACTING(ENG): 5/5
MONSTERS: 1/5 (The only monsters that appear are the rawshawks, and you can only run away from them. The creature chases are confusing and repetitive. There are about 7 creature chases in all, and it was my least favourite part of the game. It is literally the ONLY time you encounter any monsters, and you can't fight them; only run.)
CREEP FACTOR: 2/5 (At first it genuinely creeped me out because I didn't know what to expect. I was expecting things to jump out at me, things to make noise and scare the living chiz out of me. However, not even halfway through the game I learnt what to expect and just like that the game wasn't scary anymore. It became repetitive very quickly, and it lost its suspense and scare factor.)
GAMEPLAY: 3/5 (As I said, it becomes repetitive, but that doesn't mean I entirely disliked it. The game is basically broken down into 2 parts:
-Walking around finding things/exploring/solving puzzles
-Getting chased by creatures
I like finding things, I like exploring, and figuring out puzzles, so I did like that part. However the creature chases were awful.)
STORYLINE: 4/5 (The story I did like. It's one of those that unfolds as you go, however -I don't know if this was just me- but it took me until the end to even guess as to what was really going on. I found it all a bit confusing, but it might just have been my experience.)

MISC: One thing I did love about the game was how it profiles you as you go. Just like any game with multiple endings, your actions in the game determines the outcome. As you sit in sessions with a psychiatrist, you answer questions that form your character and ultimately decide the ending. As you are walking around and exploring, you can also change the outcomes by looking at certain things such as alcohol, provocative pictures, etc. It learns you as you play, and I thought that was a really neat aspect.

I don't know if I was disappointed because I had very different expectations based on what I knew of the other games, but I didn't like the game as much as I had hoped. It was definitely a fun and enjoyable play, but there was also a lot I felt was lacking.

No Weapons?!? What do you mean, I get no weapons?!?

Okay, I realize this game has gotten a lot of acclaim on many of the gamer sites, as well as this one, but if you're not a die hard Silent Hill (SH) fan this is not your game. Obviously, I'm not a fan but I know enough about the series to say that this game falls short in many aspects of the SH Universe. Basically, all you do in this game is run through the town of Silent Hill solving one puzzle after another. There are no battle sequences--you simply run away from a bunch of necromancers at the end of each chapter. You can't kill them; you can only shrug them off before you reach your goal or they overpower you. It's always a convoluted maze you need to run so it becomes trial and error in order to get through it. This is not fun! The puzzle aren't even that challenging. It's only given an M rating because of the creepiness; it's actually quite juvenile. I mean this game is simply Banjo-Kazooie with fog. It's Zelda on acid...no, check that...at least you can fight back in Zelda. The one consistent aspect to this game with respect to Silent Hill lore is it's alternate endings, which occur depending on how you respond to the various dialogue choices throughout but the game is so dull and onerous that why anyone would want to put themselves through more than one run-through is beyond me. Apparently, there is the signature Extra Terrestrial alternate ending but again, it wasn't worth my time to go through it again to find all the flying saucers. There is not even a cameo appearence by Pyramid Head (unless he shows up in an alternate ending I'm not aware of). So again, unlies you are a SH fan, don't waste your time with this game.Read full review...

Great psychological horror

Product was in perfect state, came in with case, manual and disc.

Disc look used of course, but game ran smoothly and without problems.

It's a good game

It's a good game. Harder than the first one but there's no time limit. I thought the first one was better but there's really nothing wrong with this one except the occasional need to farm more pikmin in a cave.Read full review...

Definitely the weakest Silent Hill game so far

I'm honestly baffled as to why this game has gotten mostly positive reviews. Here are my main problems with it, in no particular order:

1. There are only two (yes, two) types of mobs in the entire game. You encounter them maybe six or seven times total, and there is zero fighting. All you do is dodge them, throw them off when they tackle you, rinse and repeat ad nauseum.
2. The storyline has absolutely nothing to do with the mythos of Silent Hill and could have taken place anywhere. It might as well be Muncie, Indiana.
3. The graphics are weak, but I guess that's pretty typical for Silent Hill.
4. There are no challenging puzzles. To add insult to injury, whenever you need to interact with an object in order to progress, there's an arrow over it. I guess you could say there's no challenge, period. You have no incentive to explore.
5. The game takes maybe five hours from start to finish, and that was with me exploring every corner of every room. If you head straight for the arrows and only worry about the required progression, you could probably get through the entire game in about three hours. I thought I was maybe a third of the way through when, much to my surprise, the closing credits started rolling. It was more like a demo than a full-length game.
6. Sadly, it just isn't scary. Even when you think you're finally seeing some potential for scariness in a location (dark Tunnel of Love in an abandoned carnival, deserted shopping mall, closed high school, etc.), nothing ever happens. The most startling thing you'll experience is the loud ringing of your cell phone when you get a new message.

In conclusion, I've loved playing all of the other Silent Hill games, but I'd never recommend forking over money for this one, no matter how big of a franchise fan you are. Rent it, play through it in an evening, and then totally forget about it. I'm so disappointed.
