Incredible Musicians

The first Jimi Hendrix Experience greatest hits release still resonates.

The lion's share of Jimi's most well known early songs/recordings are here on SMASH HITS.

The stunning 'Purple Haze', the soulful and tragic 'Hey Joe', and Jimi's beautiful, wistful masterpiece, 'The Wind Cries Mary', are perhaps the most outstanding, with a brilliant interpretation of Bob Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower' not far behind.
Most of the rest are intense, dynamic R&B/Rock workouts more memorable for their driving excitement and stellar musicianship than for poetic lyrics or inspired melody. 'Crosstown Traffic', a single from Jimi's 3rd LP, ELECTRIC LADYLAND, is one of Jimi's more Pop oriented songs, and 'Manic Depression' is an odd but arresting song which gives the listener a taste of Jimi's creativity and originality. (A taste which can be more fully stimulated by many of the more obscure pieces on Jimi's original albums.)

'Remember', which was not originally on any of the American releases of Jimi's three studio LPs, is a lovely, soulful R&B song. 'Highway Chile' is a fun, entertaining story about a wandering hippie, which features some great examples of the intense, wailing guitar playing Jimi is famous for. I love it-- especially the solo, where Jimi really gets down.

About Jimi's Blues piece, 'Red House', Larry Coryell, the great Jazz and Fusion guitarist, once said:

"If I could play the Blues like that, I could make a million dollars."

On 'Red House', Jimi, playing his old Hofner guitar, sings a rather vague and generic tale about the house "where my baby lives". No matter about the weak lyrics, though, because when Jimi and crew start cookin', you won't care. The drums and bass lay down a slow, melancholy, and HEAVY groove which is perfect for Jimi's Blues style. He plays exquisite, liquid guitar lines which are drenched with feeling.
Fantastic.

A Real Classic

More than being "smash hits", this album finally sums up all the songs which made up British and American releases of the first two albums. "Purple Haze" was a single in the U.K., but left off the British edition of "Are You Experienced". The same is true of songs such as "The Wind Cries Mary", and "Hey Joe". On the other hand, songs such as "Red House" were on the British album, but not the American. Evidently, the record company was playing games in those days like they did with the Beatles. Other than that, this is an excellent collection representing the best of the singles and b-sides of Hendrix's career up till that point.Read full review...

Required Listening!

This is a musical history class. From the opening riff of Purple Haze to the final refrain of Foxey Lady you'll ride a psychedelic roller coaster of mindbending guitar work. Jimi stepped beyond where any other guitarist had gone before. Mellow blues, soul touching wah-wah, screaming, wailing, soaring licks. Whoever your favorite guitar player is, you can be sure Hendrix has had an impact on them. Listen to this and understand why.Read full review...

Smash Hits - Jimi Hendrix

This compilation of early Jimi tunes strikes a chord in all Jimi fans. As the title describes, these are Jimi's Smash Hits. His cover of Dylan's All Along the Watchtower became the standard - even Dylan copied Jimi's version. Unfortunately, the LP doesn't contain Little Wing or Spanish Castle Magic, which were on his Axis: Bold As Love album of 1967.

Although a compliation, this LP is a must for any fan of Jimi Hendrix.
