Small Size, Big Image

Using the Sony HDR-AS10 is a one button process. Simply push the record button, and the camera turns on and begins recording in about a second or two. Push it again, the recording stops. Then the camera turns itself off in a minute unless you press the record button again.

The image quality is quite good for an action cam, much better than the Chinese knockoffs. There are two wide angle settings - 120 degrees and 170 degrees, with 120 offering image stabilization and 170 offering the sharpest image quality.

Recording settings default at full HD 1920x1080x30 frames, but can be changed to 60 frames for better slow motion if you edit later. Lower resolution modes are available, but are not worth the savings in memory space.

Changing these and other settings requires a short learning curve and can seem difficult at first. Once learned, it's quite easy.

Battery life is a little over 90 minutes of real time use per charge, and the battery can be charged in the camera from home or auto using a standard micro USB cable, which is available anywhere.

Compared with the GoPro of the same model year and price, the Sony is slightly better in exposure, color and sharpness. Audio is much better. The stabilization isn't available in the GoPro.

Many accessories are available for the camera, the most notable being the underwater housing and helmet mount.

Unlike the cheap knockoffs, the reliability of Sony is legendary. A clean used Sony AS10 is a true bargain by comparison, and even makes a nice camcorder for normal everyday events.

A good alternative to GoPro

Quite impressed with the AS20 and the wrist remote, I use this set up on my motorcycle helmet and it does a much better job with image stabilization than my GoPro Hero 4 Silver (and the part number is shorter ha ha) and the image quality is almost as good, not quite but close. But having a steady image is more important to me than super high image quality because what good is it if the view is jumpy. So for not much investment try one of the Sony's if you are like me and like a stable image.Read full review...

Better then I expected.

This camera has as good a picture as my Canon MKII. record time is long, 2+ hrs.
Canon on stills, Sony on video, great combo.

Overall, a really good camera.

I acquired this camera new for a really good price to use on my motorcycle.

THE GREAT FEATURES
 Image stabilizer – is super great; AWESOME.
 The picture quality – great.
 Can use 64gb micro SD card.
 It’s tiny in size.
 It fits along side the helmet just fine with very little to no wind resistance.
 It has a tripod screw mount that can attach right to a tripod (when off the bike); unlike the GoPro which I had to buy an adapter to mount on a tripod.
 Auto shut off feature that can be toggled on/off.
 Many feature that can be set.
 The slow-mo and super slow-mo options.
 The 1920X1080 setting for supper HD.

NEITHER GOOD OR BAD FEATURES
 The battery and SD card door cover.
 It opens fine, seems to do what is intended (keeps the battery and card covered.
 The micro USB charging/file xfer cable…It would be slightly better if the cable was the same type as used by the GoPro and Garmin and a lot of external hard drive cables. This one is like the Motorola smartphone USB connector.
 Has a nice on off sound that can be switched off.

ANNOYING BUT I CAN LIVE WITH
 The LED screen is just a tad too small.
 When you plug in the USB to the computer, you always get two screens, one opens the PDF folder on the camera and the other opens the folders holding he files. Not a big deal, but still annoying.
 I had to purchase an adapter so that I could use my GoPro mount connector that is stuck on my helmet. I had the GoPro first and did not want two mounts stuck on the helmet, so I now use the GoPro mount as a universal mount with the adapter I bought for the Sony – I think it cost about $7.
 The cheesy cable adapter door on the bottom of the camera. It works but I wonder if it will still work after a few hundred opening and closings.

THE NOT SO GREAT FEATURES
 You can’t record while charging, unlike the GoPro, which does - thus you need extra batteries if you are riding a motorcycle on long trips and want to somewhat continuously record. However, I can USB charge it from the bike’s power outlet, so if you are doing a few thousand-mile trip with some really long boring interstate stretches, it will not be an issue.
 In humid areas like WI, I found that the blasted lens condenses moisture on the inside when the sun shines on the camera (attached to the helmet) and cruising 55 mph and above; actually just about any time, any speed within about 10-15 minutes after starting out. I thought about drilling 2 holes near the back on the underside, but decided instead to first opt to stuff a silicon packet between the camera and the housing case on the inside. I had to open the packet with a razor and remove a bunch of the silicon so it would be thin enough to sit along the opposite side of the LED window. I tried it today; it was humid as heck and the entire 3-hour trip was condensation free. I’ll continue to use the silicon pack to make sure it was not a fluke. I think the silicon packet came out of a pair of boots or it might have even come with the camera and packing material.
 You can’t charge the camera unless you take it out of the waterproof housing.
 I don’t believe you can take the SD card out and transfer the video to a computer. At least when I try the SD card wants to be formatted by the computer. So far, I’ve found that transferring files from the camera to the computer must be done from the camera directly hooked up the computer; it’s like using the camera as a jumbo-sized jump drive

Great Camera for the Money

Used velcro to attach this camera to my motorcycle helmet and rode in rain and shine. Camera performed flawlessly with one exception - battery life.
I put a larger memory card in this camera and it will take over 4 hours of movies. That being said the battery only lasts about 90 minutes of continuous filming.
It uploads to the computer easily and the free software from Sony helps you edit, combine and create videos for playback on any device.
You have to familiarize yourself with the instruction manual and erasing video from the Camera requires reformatting after you have uploaded your content.
The picture quality is very good and the stable movie taking function works great..

Great action cam and also affordable!

The Sony Action Cam is great! I purchased this item in place of a GoPro. I've used the GoPro Hero3 Black edition about 6 months ago, and the video quality is great. Sounds quality isn't as good obviously when you place the camera inside the waterproof case but same goes for the GoPro. I found the Sony Action Cam to be easier to use as well. It's still a little confusing using the camera (still picture) function, but easier to use than a GoPro. I haven't used the Sony extensivly yet, but as long as battery last more than 30 minutes I'll be happy. Finally the value. I dont think you'll find a better action camera for the price of this item. The biggest factor that made me choose a Sony Action Cam over the GoPro, is the price. $400 for a GoPro, or $200 for the Sony and they have just about the same quality and functions.Read full review...
