REVISED Good for solo prosumer but you pay a premium for XLR inputs, shotgun mic, color bars, and 1kHz tone

The Sony HDR NX30 costs over $1800 new and around $1200 used as of early 2016. Image wise it has the same 1/2.88 inch sensor and Zeiss 28mm wide angle zoom lens, Balanced Optical Stabilization System (BOSS), built in hard drive, SDXC flash card slot, photo/movie modes, and LED projector as the Sony PJ 710, 740, 760 and 790, all which cost much less, and all can be used as B Roll camcorders to match the NX30. The big difference is audio quality. NX30 XLR inputs have manually adjustable gain for clean, hiss free PCM recording. PJ700 models all use auto gain which introduces hiss, even with a good mini plug mic attached. But if you buy a good outdoor boom mic, like a Sennheiser MKE600, or indoor dialogue mic, like a RODE NT3, and record your audio via XLR connector to a Zoom or Tascam digital audio recorder, you can get clean audio on a SD flash card you can sync up later in FCPX and other software. The large plastic lens hood supplied with all these models has a tiny hole to allow the built in LED lights to shine through, but cannot thread in a UV, neutral density, polarizer, or any other glass filter. I use 62mm filters and wide lens hood, attached with a 52mm to 62mm step up ring instead. The NX30 is a very good mobile prosumer camcorder for a single shooter, and can be matched with cheaper PJ models for multi camera shoots in AVCHD 1080 HD format. Or buy several NX30 if you can afford them.Read full review...

Best Camcorder under $2000

I've used this for actual television shows and documentary's where bigger camera's aren't practical. The quality is splendid and the ease of use & setup and go, is a snap. Nightshot is an awesome feature and makes capturing video in semi-darkness great. It doesn't record 1080/30p but it can be adjusted in your video editing software. The 1080/60p is amazing for use in moving scenes. Dont be fooled because it's not classified in the pro camera section.. because it should be. Sony replaced this camera with another camera using the pmw-200's xmor censor. Mistake! This camera does just as good, actually better in my opinion. It's such a compact, ready to go camcorder. I had the choice to get this camera or the pmw200. I choose this one if it tells you anything. If you can find a good one in good condition. Get it. You'll be happy you did.Read full review...

NICE!!

This is my second Sony HXRNX30U HD Camera. I bought it to shoot a Digital Film in the near future. It was the BEST deal I've seen on Ebay in about 3 years, so I couldn't pass it up!! The only issue (which is minor) that I have is that the lens hood becomes unattached at the slightest little jolt. But I can live with that.........Read full review...
