Giving old technology new Life

My Sony five disk player door stuck. I took it to someone to get it fixed and they could not fix it because Sony no longer makes parts for this model. So I found another one on line that was very close to the Sony Five Disk Player I had. The one I purchased from E-Bay is slightly slower at changing the CD's, and the sound is not quite as good as my old one, but I am very grateful to find one that I know how to operate, that interfaces with my other older equipment, sounds fine, looks good, and WORKS! Thank you for being willing to repair this type of equipment. It was well worth the money I spent, and keeps the product out of the land fills. You are appreciated very much! This was a win, win purchase in my opinion.Read full review...

Expected old age.

Within a few days, stopped reading SACD layer on hybrid discs. Blue lamp went out and stayed out. Performs very well on SACD, and the remote works flawlessly. It's analog output on CD is very very good, but slightly exceeded with a modern DAC.
A great deal for a decades oldachine, and convenient to use.

Sony SCD-CE595 5 Disk Changer

After buying a few Sony 5 disk 500 series changers over a period of 10 years or so, all I can say is "great value and fine performance"! Where other reviewers may have had some relatively minor misgivings, I can only offer praise for these non Sony ES 'consumer models' (all 500 series). My newest is the CE595 (2008 model?). It seems to have a little less load & unload noise than earlier Sony models (minor point in any case). Some say the load speed is too slow on these Sonys but what's the big rush? It seems to load & unload fast enough for me. Very pleased with sound quality, control layout and ease of operation. Being 'old school' and not too impatient, I don't even bother using the remote control. I also have a much higher end silver faced single load (used, recent release not a Sony) CD player via eBay for over $250 and a well regarded Denon DCM-370 changer for comparisons. Only the $250 player sounds a tad better for its high volume bass thumps but I'd say the Sony hit a real sweet spot sound & performance-wise for the 'under $50 used price' I paid on eBay. I only have a few SACD discs so my buying choice was based mainly on my prior experience with Sony CD players and their higher end ES products. I often see these Sony CE-595s on eBay for well under $100. I'm sure Sony sold a lot of them. Be patient and you can snag one for $75 or less.Read full review...

A bargain for $150 CDP

I have owned this Sony SCD-CE595 CD player for more than 7 years. I bought it because I need a CD player can play SACD disc. But majority I still used it for playing CD, CD-R and CD-RW. It has the ability to play all of them. I was not impressed with the sound quality at the beginning. It took me about 4-5 years to break it in completely. Right now it sounds beautifully in my audiophile system. I have compared it with other high-end CD players (included a $500 ONKYO and a $1600 CAL Audio Lab). I think this SONY SCD CE595 stands it's own very well. It is not perfect but how much more can you ask for a $150 CD player?Read full review...

Exactly what we were looking for. Easy to set up and easy to use. Like that it plays 5 CDs for continuous listening.

This CD player was an exact replacement for the one we had for more than 15 years. This model was discontinued and we were very fortunate to find another one that looks and plays like it is brand new. It allows us to have music playing continually through out our home. Read full review...

Calibration problems

I've owned the SCDce595 since it was introduced. It has a flaw in that the laser calibration tends to go awry leading to inability to read the SACD layer(s) of hybrid discs. There is a fairly easy user calibration process that often restores the ability to read hybrid discs using the player's diagnostic program. The manual doesn't mention this but the procedure is documented in several web postings (SA-CD.net for example. Google Sony SCDce595 calibration.) Unfortunately Sony's user material doesn't give much information on the problem. It's contained in the service manual for the unit. Sound quality is good but no match for the Marantz and Oppo players I own.
Update 08/2023: Sadly, my units (I own two) no longer respond to the calibration correction noted above. They no longer read the SACD layers of hybrid discs. SACD only (rarities) read and play perfectly as well as the CD layer.
