Sookie Stackhouse Novels

A refreshing look at the vampire sub-culture ( and other things that go bump in the night). I have only read 2 of the 7 books in this series but can't wait to start the third!
Sookie is a very likeable main character and there is a whole entourage of other interesting characters for support.
Who hasn't dreamed of having a really nice boss who is a shape shifter? OR a very sexy vampire boyfriend who can charm the socks off your grandmother by telling her the true facts of the Civil War, because he was there to experience it first hand. And just wait until you meet Elvis! Or Eric the Red....
These books never seem to bog down with too many adjectives and too few verbs. Ms Harris has a way of moving you right along without being too short and terse. At risk of being left in the open to die at dawn I have to say she has Anne Rice beat hands down, don't get me wrong I really like Rices' books, but she can go on and on can't she? Also Harris seems to be more in touch with this era, I'm very comfortable with the settings and language. She can bring erotica into the books without being smutty and she uses very little profanity but you are still in this time and this age.
I have seriously considered subscribing to HBO just to see if they were able to capture the magic in their series that is in these books.
All in all this is a very good light read for those of us who want to just relax and completely enjoy a series of books with a slightly different take on vampires and the genre of fantasy. Love them!!

Great Title--Sookie grabs you & Stackhouse holds on

I had seen the True Blood series and had wished I could know more background information and get inside the characters more. I actually bought the gift set as a birthday gift for my sister but we like to read books and then discuss them. It was great to take the books apart and talk about the sentence structure and the use of local color in both speech and geographic area. I have a PHD in English Lit and I have never had such a good time with a piece literature. I see some hints of Tennessee Williams in the characters and in the way social class is juxtaposed with predjudice. The characters are vivid and it is quite hard not to empathize with most of them, even when they show the worst of us as human or not.
I believe that you will truly enjoy joining Sookie Stackhouse in her adventures and discoveries and will consider your money well spent for these additions to your privat library. DRG

Loved these Books and Love the TV Show

I almost didn't buy these books because I didn't want to ruin my TV viewing experience of True Blood. But HBO makes us wait too long between seasons and I was missing Sookie Stackhouse. These books are great and I would recommend them to avid fans of True Blood. The plot from the books is similar to the show but also really different. Yes, there are likely some spoilers but I don't really mind since the books are so worth it. I just can't put them down! The perfect thing to do during a boring cold February. Pure entertainment! You must read them in volume order to really appreciate the continuing story line. So what better way than to get the whole set? This set is vols. 1-7 and there are now 10 volumes. I just had to buy those too! Now I'm really looking forward to seeing how the show will unfold in the next season. These books are fun, fun, fun!!Read full review...

WARNING: HIGHLY ADDICTIVE

I haven't been this engrossed in a book in years. I wouldn't recommend it for the teenage vamp novel groopies because some of the scenes are pretty steamy. But adults will love it. It has the perfect balance of action, thriller, romance and normalcy. Although my life is absolutely nothing like Sookie's, I really feel like I connected with her. And even though it's obviously complete fiction, I find myself caring deeply who she ends up with and what she suffers along the way. I read all six books in five days - while working 45-50 hours per week and taking care of a home and family. I literally couldn't put it down. If there's a Charlaine Harris Anonymous Club out there, I should probably join it. But if Eric Northman really exists, send him my way. So, all I can say is consider yourself warned!Read full review...

SOOKIE: NOT AS GOOD AS TWILIGHT BUT WELL WORTH READING!

I read all seven of these books in about a week and a half. I could not put them down. They are easy to read and very entertaining. My favorite was the 4th book "Dead to the World" because of the storyline involving Eric. I am also a fan of the TV show but I am able to enjoy the books separately because the plotlines vary. These books have everything: sex, humor, violence, intrigue... and the characters are interesting and likeable. I would recommend them to any adult reader.Read full review...

Very addicting, imaginative and fabulous series!

I bought these books after literally becoming addicted to TrueBlood on HBO. A friend of mine let me borrow the first season on DVD. I struggled through the first two episodes, thinking it was a little cheesy and also wondering where in the heck they were going with everything. By the 3rd or 4th episode, i was absolutely hooked. Now, here we are midway through season 3 and I'm even MORE addicted! I really wanted to get these books since I was so into the series. Everyone had said they were very good. So, the day that I received these in the mail, I cracked open the first book and started reading. From that point on, I was hooked. Any spare moment in my day (being a single mom who works full time, I don't have many spare moments!) I grab my book and start reading. They are beautifully written, Charlaine really helps you visualize the situation without over-wording. The fact that I had seen the HBO series first may have helped a little, but these books just read so smoothly, it's hard to put them down. She tells a good story, and she makes you wonder what in the world is going to happen next, and just when you think you have it all figured out, it surprises you! I've had the book set for less than a week and i'm already on the 3rd book. That goes to show you just how awesome they are! You will be deeply involved with the characters and their emotions. I dare say, you may even shed a tear or two. If you have any reservations about buying this set, i hope this review helps you change your mind. These books are fantastic!Read full review...

Awesome Books

This series is for any ADULT (over 18 please!) who loves the Twilight series and wants something more. I like the HBO series but after reading these books, I can see where the TV show could be so much more!! I read all 7 books in less than 2 weeks, mostly on Saturdays and Sundays and in the evenings. Very easy reading style but some of the most literal, visually descriptive writing as well. My sons (ages 12 and 15) are reading the Twilight series now, but they will have to wait a few years for these books. Highly recommend these books to any ADULT!Read full review...

Huge fan

I bought these books for my 15 year old granddaughter for her birthday, but decided to read them to see if they were suitable for her. Glad I did--they are not suitable for a 15 year old (lots of vivid sexual descriptions). Anyway I read them all and have become addicted to the plights of Sookie and her various suitors. I have since read all of the books in the series (library) and am anxiously awaiting the next one. I applaud Charlaine Harris and wonder where she comes up with all of these ideas. What more can I say? I have enjoyed these books very much and would recommend them to anyone who likes fantacy romance with lots of action thrown in.Read full review...

really good series

I don't have cable or a way to watch HBO but I heard everyone talking about the show so I found theese books. They are a great read I couldn't wait to get to the next book. I am a vampire novel fanatic though. Parents beware there are sexual context and it does get a bit detailed so I would not say no teens but pre teens should not read theese books. My 14 year old read the first one before I did and she was a bit red in the face lol. I give this series a A+ pick it up if you like vampire stories. and for the price of the set it is a great deal.Read full review...
