Stir Crazy (DVD, 1999)

This is a funny movie! Two best friends from New York City decide that if they are ever going to be successful, they need a change of scenery. Skip Donahue (Gene Wilder) is a writer, and Harry Monroe (Richard Prior) an unemployed actor are off to Hollywood to become rich and famous. Anybody ever heard the old saying "The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side . . ." Well, here they are in LA, dressed as woodpeckers, and doing a dance routine for a bank promotion. While on break, their costumes get stolen and the bank is robbed. They get charged with the crime and are sentenced to 125 years in prison.

All of a sudden, employment is no longer a problem! Now in a maximum security prison, they have to learn the ropes and make some serious friends pretty fast. They try to fake insanity, but wind up thrown in with real nuts. They make an assortment of friends, killers, real bank robbers, etc.

After about three months, they are called into the Warden's office for some special tests, to see if they have any aptitude for riding on a mechanical bull. When Skip is able to ride the bull on full speed, he is selected to be a contestant in the prison rodeo. This rodeo is big business with lots of money being bet. The warden is planning a big score, and it will be dangerous for anyone who screws it up.

The ultimate plan is to formulate an escape during the rodeo. All of the criminals are in on it and Harry and Skip set the plan into motion.

Stir Crazy - Gene Wilder / Richard Pryor

Stir Crazy is an absolutely hilarious movie, as with any Gene Wilder / Richard Pryor movie. Couple guys get framed for bank robbery and sent to prison. The only way out is for Gene Wilder wo compete in the prison rodeo as a bull rider. If you like Gene Wilder or Richard Pryor movies, or better yet, movies with both of them, this is a must see... Also recommend Silver Streak with Wilder/Pryor, Moving with Pryor, and, of course, Blazing Saddles with Wilder. Blazing Saddles may be funniest movie ever made, but not a good choice for kids...Read full review...

A good movie to watch while smoking.

Itโ€™s a movie thatโ€™s been suggested many times because Iโ€™m a huge Gene Wilder fan.
Iโ€™ll admit, the first watch wasnโ€™t amazing, but the second time (which may or may not have involved a prescription inhalant) was waaaay funnier. Read full review...

Stir Crazy..ALWAYS!! a classic to me...family fun!!!

SO, SO EXCELLENT!!!
Great plot, lots of humor...& it DOESN'T end when the fat guy sings.
I think that's the best part, is when Erland van Lidth sang "Down in the
valley".
It's a real shame he's dead. Of course, at approx 400 lbs, it's no surprise.
He was just a VERY BIG teddy bear.

This movie is GREAT for the whole family, I recommend it whole heartedly.

Stir Crazy

It is a classic, and for good reason. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll wonder why you did'nt revisit this old comedy sooner. I must admit grossburger reminded me alot of my father, but that is another issue all together. But in the ever growing genre of prison rodeo movies, this is the best, and with pryor and wilder together, how could you miss? If you watched it years ago, see it again, if you never saw it, make it seen. Good veiwing, and eat lots of popcorn.Read full review...
