One of the great comedys of all time.
Funny story with a great cast. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman on top of their game. This help sealed or launch their careers as well as John Candy, Judge Reinhold, and Sean Young.

The new DVD offers great picture and quality. Just as good if you were in theatres.

The DVD features were very good with the choice of either the original theatrical version or the new extended cut. I was surprised by what was cut out, but it did not hurt the film being cut. The new 2 part documentary was great with how the movie came about (original concept would have been a totally different movie), and what was improvised on the set. Nice tribute to John Candy. Interviews included Bill Murray, Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis and almost the whole cast.

Dated DVD Release Has Some Issues...

The film itself is great - Ivan Reitman nearing the top of his game and the ensemble working very well together on a genuinely funny script. But the DVD itself show some age, in that it offers both the original theatrical and the Extended Cut versions in a technically awkward way. Instead of two separate data files, the DVD is set up to simply include, or exclude, the additional scenes. When it excludes them - meaning when you're watching the original theatrical version - there's a distinct pause, or hang, in the images. Like a lot of Extended Cuts of films, it's easy to see why the cut scenes were left out; they don't generally add much to the experience. The one notable exception is the scene at the Chateau, during which P.J. Soles is substantially naked for a surprising amount of screentime. Who was the genius who decided to leave THAT out? Also, all of the extra scenes are accessible separately, as Deleted Scenes under the Special Features menu, so the the Extended Cut version is just something of a gimik that doesn't work as well as it should.Read full review...

Murray, Candy, Ramis and Sean Young!

This movie is hilarious from start to finish.
The situations, jokes, gags, nonsense and John Larroquete(sp) make for a great time and the women aren't bad either!
Warren Oates is perfect here. A fine actor and a sense of humor too.
The first-class RV - urban military machine - is just great. The Griswolds could have used this. I would love to have this machine. Just think of the damage you could do in L.A. or NYC!
The supporting cast is fun as well and I loved the mud wrestling!

Back when movies were still done right.

I actually thought I already owned a copy but when I went to watch it, discovered that I surprisingly did not.
Bill Murray was at his prime here, not too far removed from his days with SNL. Again, when SNL was great. The rest of the cast is superb as well; Harold Ramis, John Candy, John Larroquette (right before his Night Court run), just to name a few. Heartedly recommended. Read full review...

Stripes...If its not broken don't fix it.

The extended scenes added to the original provides some more back story but the overall disk presentation did not do well. Perhaps later releases were fixed but when I bought the uncut version on the day it was released I was looking forward to see what was added. Some of the scenes were simply extended with more dialogue (i.e. bathroom scene with Winger and Sgt Hulka) and there were even new sequences. What was unfortunate is that the disk would pause everytime a new scene was added or a transition from an old scene to a new or vice-versa, and even some of the old, untouched sequences would trigger a pause. I thought it may be my machine at first, but then I heard of others having noticed the same issues on their players. I never heard if Sony had corrected the problem or offered a disk exchange for these troubled disks. The errors made it hard to watch with all of the pausing. The extended scenes were good. Hopefully a Blu Ray will come out with both versions and seamless branching between the two. Another turnoff was having new and extended scenes accompanied by an on onscreen marker to identify the start and end, you couldn't turn them off and they were distracting.Read full review...
