Fantastic game!

A masterpiece! Stubbs the Zombie shares a game engine with Halo: Combat Evolved, and Wideload games (now long gone, I'm sad to say) used it VERY well! The setting is extremely creative, though not fully utilized--and I'd say the same for both the music and humor. Come on, an alternate timeline where an ex-Nazi scientist helps create an extremely advanced city where daily life is nearly perfect, with the player controlling an undead ex-salesman as he decimates it all?? Where does this even come from?!

Yes, the urban, futuristic 1950s setting, while it was certainly new (especially at the time of the game's release), didn't seem to have much of an impact on the game. I'm convinced that there would be very little different if it was closer to how things really were then. One "level" in particular places the player on a farm, and most of the way through, there's practically nothing that would imply that it's in an extremely technologically advanced world. Not that the setting _needs_ to have a major impact on the game, of course, just something I wanted to note.

The music is VERY well done, too! The soundtrack is filled with covers of 1950s-era classics covered by bands that were rather popular around the game's release. The only downside is that they aren't heard very often while playing through the game's story.

One last big thing to bring up: the entire game (on the Xbox, anyway) can be played with another person via local split-screen co-op! Like the option is right there on the menu, and while I haven't given it a try, the co-op trailer makes it look like nothing is changed at all--that you'd just be playing the same game while sharing the screen with a friend. That's probably the best way to handle co-operative play, in my opinion, so it's a much-appreciated inclusion!

In the end, the game looks good, feels GREAT, and is one of my absolute favorite titles for the Xbox! It certainly deserved releases on more platforms, but I suppose it is what it is. It probably isn't worth buying at the prices that one would find a copy for nowadays, but if you find a good deal, know that I have no hesitation in recommending this game. It's a true gem, and one that deserves easier access and many, many more players. Here's hoping that we see those things someday.

zombie frenzy

fun game with a retro feel.it has updated songs that were written in the 50's but now have a modern feel but still have the old feel too.if you played destroy all humans you would probably like this one.it has a cool way of completeing missions like peeing in the town water supply to make it toxic.roll your head, throw your hand, possess humans and use them to destroy, throw gut grenades, fart to throw humans off enough to easily eat their brains. i liked this game,it is a little short but short good games are easy to play over again,i beat in with my girlfriend in co-op split screen mode in about 6-8 hours.Read full review...

Stubbs is top quality

Even playing the game now, almost 20 years later, this game is as creative as it is fun. I know the "zombie-apocalypse" shtick has gained insane popularity, and it may seem like this situation has been done to death now, but this game really shines on its own right. The graphics are extremely impressive for the original xbox, the gameplay is awesome and addictive, the fact that you're playing as a zombie slowly creating the zombie horde is as satisfying and hysterical as you can imagine, and the soundtrack features a lot of great old songs to add comedic resonance through out. Top quality, definitely worth picking up if you're a serious gamerRead full review...

one of the greats

Stubbs is great. Fun, challenging gameplay, huge levels to explore, tons of variety, and a sense of humor you just really don't see in games anymore. Equal parts crass, satirical, and just genuinely fun, the story in Stubbs starts as mere background dressing and turns into something actually memorable. A love story of sorts supported by this retro-futuristic world full of inept police officers and armed barber shop quartets. Add on top of everything an amazing two player split screen mode and Stubbs is a winner. Even at its high price, you shouldn't miss this game.Read full review...

STOP EATING MEEEEEE!

this game is a refreshing, light-hearted twist on the zombie genre. you play as stubbs the zombie, a decent, working-class zombie with a taste for the cerebellum. what sets this game apart from nearly every other game out there is the originality (YOU'RE the one eating the brains!), the top-notch music (i have a soft spot for 50s tunes), the easy-to-learn controls, and most importantly: the FUN factor!!!

you can play solo or team up with a buddy (TWELVE TIMES the fun). even if you go it alone, you won't be alone for long! once you eat people's brains, they turn into zombies and aid you in your delicious quest :D HOW AWESOME IS THAT?! you can MAKE people into your allies. you gain funny abilities such as the stomach bomb, atomic fart (XD), head bowling, and my favorite: the hand of possession! you can drive tractors, trucks, rips peoples arms off and beat them to death with them.

the places you'll be stumbling around in vary from the clean streets of the city, to a police station, to a laboratory. sometimes things can get confusing and you'll end up wandering around for a good half hour, but there are people to kill all the while, so it's cool.

the easy-going 50s songs provide a nice background to the cries of agony and sounds of mutilation. OHHHHHH and i haven't even MENTIONED the dance off with the chief of police! the people who made this game have got a great sense of humor, and you'll be seeing that ALL through this game.

you can possess people with guns and artillery, you can use corners and corn fields to your advantage, picking people off as they walk right by you unaware of your presence. you'll also go up against tanks in this game, which, needless to say, is a real bitch.. but still fun all the while :D

to sum it up: this game is an INSTANT classic. once x-box drops to 100 bucks, this game (along with the HALO games) will be reason enough to buy an x-box. TWO BONGS WAYYYYYY UP!

No game like it.

Only game I've seen that the roles are reversed. Playing as a zombie attacking humans instead of the other way around.

Be The Zombie!

This game is one of those love it or hate it titles, the crude humor is more than enough for the rental price and with 12 levels you could beat this game in a matter of days(hours for the hardcore gamer). The audio and sound effects are bold and true, the graphics fit in well with the 50's era and the story...though it had it's moments most will find it cheeze at best. The bottom line: Zombie fans step up, this one's a no brainer(no pun intended) but for everyone else looking for a zombie shooter is S.O.L.Read full review...
