Good performances, pointless plot

I had wanted to see this film for some time, and thought that I was lucky to find it at such a great price. However, although some of the performances are good, the story seems pointless. Maybe I was expecting something different, but I was disappointed in the movie. As I said, the performances are good (especially the two leads), but it may just not be my cup of tea.Read full review...

Worth a view and not a total waste of time.

I bought this movie thinking it would be more upbeat than it was. I have to say that there is a lot of truth to the movie since I have seen it firsthand myself and know the 'life on the streets' ploys and shortcomings.

I thought it was cute that his sister did what she did. I'm old enough to be a parent, but I remember when I was 18 and told my sister I was gay and took her to a few gay clubs to show her my life as it was compared to hers. She and my mom were the only 2 who supported me during those difficult coming out years. But I regress, just wanted to say why I thought the sister doing that was cute.

The acting overall is so so, though Chris Noble died in 2004, it was sad to see that he did have acting skills and was starting to come into his own...you know, pay your dues, do the so so stuff and get better roles later. Unfortunately that was the last thing he did.

I always blame slow moving or mediocre acting on the director, not the actors. If they are bad, it doesn't matter, kick them out and replace them! Butch tried to show a 'seedy' side of his gay life (all life has seedy sexual sides, heterosexual as well!) But it didn't feel real. I lived next to that side of life but rarely partook in it knowing what comes of it. I think I identified with the movie because not knowing where to go at 16 to lose my virginity, I did the same thing and went to the red light district to 'come out' and it was interesting to say the least. But unlike Cliff, who hangs on to a loser, I got out of it fast.

All in all I would say that it is worth viewing because it is short and it may peak your interest into better portrayed movies about the seedy side. I bought it because I thought at the very least it had to have some good parts...it did, but not as many as I would have liked.

Sugar (DVD, 2004)

Movie synopsis
"Stuck in a rather dull and predictable suburban existence, Cliff (Andre Noble) has never ventured to explore his burgeoning homosexuality. For his 18th birthday, his precocious 12-year-old sister (Haylee Wanstall) gives him a bottle of booze and a joint, and instructs him to put an end to his virginity. Cliff, all too happy to take her up on the challenge, ends up cruising the downtown red light district where prostitution and other nefarious activities seem to be an exotic and adventurous new world. He falls in love with Butch (Brendan Fehr), a sexy and sympathetic hustler. When Cliff finds out Butch is addicted to crack, he discovers that life on the street is not as alluring as he once believed."

This film really portrays the hustler life style. Cliff is in love with Butch and does everything with him and the breaking point was when Cliff goes with Butch to one of his tricks and gets raped. Cliff no longer wants to be around Butch whom he onced loved and admired. Butch falls apart and falls further into drugs eventually dying.

It's interesting that Cliff's sister is the one who encourages him to go out and "lose his virginity" and even gives him drugs, too. Where are the Parents guiding these misguided souls?

The film wasn't too bad but at times the film was dry and not enough going on but it's the dialogue that one has to listen to, how they look at each other, the body language, all that plays an important part and we are suppose to search harder to see what is really going on and surmise what they are feeling.

Great film, still recommended watching!

Enjoy with a bottle of wine!!~~~~~~~

Wonderful Movie with a Tragic ending!!

This movie has all the right ingrediants and was doing great with dealing with some very sensitive issues with the coming out and having a crush on a guy that is riding the fence on gay/straight depending on getting his fix. So many of us find ourselves confusing love with the need to take care of the helpless! This is one of those films. Unfortunately it has a sour ending too frequently found in movies with this genre!Read full review...
