Sukiyaki Western Django - No Spaghetti Sauce!
This Japanese produced film is a homage in a small way to Spaghetti westerns. It is a frenetic, strange film, combining bits of Samurai and western films with snippets of famous dialogue. If Akira Kurosawa had seen this film (and probably would have turned over in his grave), he would have titled it - "Yojumbles". The Japanese actors are forced to speak english, so it is still best to leave the subtitles turned on. There is a cameo by Quentin Tarentino as a gunfighter named Paringo who mumbles through his part so that he is less coherent than the Japanese actors. He seems to be in every part of the film industry these days, much like something you step in on a farm. What is missing here is characters you can care about, the essence of good film making. This is light fluff, entertaining, but not memorable. There are moments of excellent cinematography, and the Blu ray picture and sound are consistently high, but the digital doctoring of the color and contrast take your attention away from the film at points. If they wanted to make this movie more identifiable to western audiences, it would have been better titled as " A Fistful of Sushi"!Read full review...
