Love this lens.

I bought this lens after reading quite a few reviews on line. All were positive, but this lens is no longer in production. From what I read, this lens has a better build quality and is much sharper. I haven't used the newer version but the side by side pictures that were posted do show the difference in photo quality. That plus the f2.8 through all focal lengths make this a great lens for the price.Read full review...

Good lens

Focusing is a little on the slower side and a bit noisy, but overall great quality.

Great "walking around" & travel lens. Excellent Image quality.

Sharp as a pin - images are actually sharper than my Nikon 17-55 F/2.8, which is a more expensive lens, bulkier, & heavier than this Tamron. Tamron colors aren't as good as the Nikon, but this is an excellent all purpose lens & very light, compact, & easy to carry.Read full review...

Glad I was able to pick this lens up. It's on my camera most of the time now.

Got my lens used and in good shape. Pretty happy with it's performance. Auto focus is quick and responsive. Images are sharp, build quality is good. Produces good low light images. Was in Niagra falls recently and took some night photos from our hotel room. I'll included some in the photos below. Very happy with this lens.Read full review...

very good light weight mid range lense

a very good mid range lense. the optics is much better then the 17-56 cannon kit lense and the lense is wider in diameter. it has a good feeling when zooming in and out and its come with a hood to protect against glare. its compact when it in the 17mm focal lense and it is light weight.
it doesnt have a stabilizer so when taking video in 55mm focal lemgth things can get fuzzy

Amazing lens

For this price this lens is stunning) Build quality is really good as well as image quality. Only one thing I don't like is that focus ring is moving while focusing but other then that lens is the best for its value.Read full review...

If Tamron has a full frame equivalent which be a 28-80mm, I'd buy it!

Surprisingly good lens....faster than the canon standard kit lens 18-55mm f/3.5. I would love to keep it but it wouldn't work on my next camera which will be a full frame. It did fabulous paired with my canon 90d. See the last shoot in the 7 photo stitch I did in low light of Cascade Lake, Idaho.Read full review...

A good lens

Works well with my Canon 80D. It is a bit on the slow side for focusing. Will work great for portraits and a good budget lens for semi-professional and/or aspiring photographers. This is a good fit for photographers that are looking for a good portrait, indoor or a scenery lens. Not great for fast moving subjects, but a good step above a kit lens. This is a sharp lens and a lot fun to work with.Read full review...

A Great lens for indoor and outdoor work

PROS: PRICE, 2.8 constant aperture, build quality, warranty, sharpness,

CONS: manual focus switch is hard to operate, focus ring could be larger

I recently needed a good wide angle lens for an upcoming assignment. I was on a budget (aren't we all??) and the choices came down to this lens and the Canon 17-55mm IS f 2.8. I rented the Canon lens and purchased the Tamron (here on Ebay for under 350.00 with shipping). I figured if the Canon outperformed the Tamron substantially, I could re-sell the Tamron and buy the much more expensive Canon.

I conducted my test (I am not a professional tester, but have sold enough photographs to consider myself a good photographer) between the two lenses using both inside and outside subjects. Frankly, I was a bit amazed at the results.

The Canon performed well (as expected) but the IS did not seem to be as helpful as I had hoped in low light situations. It actually did a fair amount of searching on auto-focus while the Tamron did seem faster. When it finally locked on, the result was sharper with the Canon, in the beginning. I say this because after using the Tamron for awhile, I was able to steady myself enough, that the results were every bit as good as the Canon's.

As for saturation, contrast and overall color, I shoot RAW format mostly and the most important thing for me is sharpness, but in jpeg (highest settings) I did notice that the Tamron compared favorably to the Canon in all catagories.

I ended up choosing the Tamron lens over the Canon due to cost, saved enough to buy a back-up camera body!! I have not regreted this decision at all!!

Other points to consider, it is made for smaller digital sensors - however, since I doubt that I am ever going to buy a 5D or 1Ds, I think I am safe.

It does not have any type of image stabilization, so if your not able to use a tripod AND your not careful - your results will vary. (though I still believe with some practice, ANYONE can use this lens and be happy!)

CAMERA EQUIPMENT OWNED
40D - body and battery pack (with camera armor on both)
xti (400D) - body and battery pack (with camera armor on camera)
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8
Canon 70-200mm f4 L with IS
Sigma 170-500mm

A great "everyday" lens and a serious upgrade from your "kit" lens

I bought this lens to replace the "kit" lens that came with my old, trusty Canon 20d (18-55mm non-is model). I've only used it so far on my 7D.

I did a lot of reading and decided on this lens because it's fast (2.8 aperture) and has above-average picture quality. I selected the NON-IMAGE-STABILIZED VERSION ON PURPOSE as every review I read said that - regardless of whether the image stabilization (VC) was turned on or off - the sharpness was not as crisp as this non-vc lens. I can't say whether it's true or not, but this is FAR AND AWAY the sharpest lens I have ever owned. Some people complain about the motor noise, but it was barely noticeable to me at first, and now don't notice it at all. One thing to be aware of for Canon users like me: the focus and zoom ring turn opposite canon-made lenses, which may make you trip up the first few times you use it. Again, this is something I don't even notice anymore.

I highly recommend this lens to anyone who thinks it may be time to replace or upgrade a kit lens, or for someone who wants a good "carry around" lens for everyday shooting in all lighting situations. I've shot probably 1,000 images with mine so far and it still astounds me how good the quality is.

I am using this lens with speedbuster adapter on Olympus OM D EM1 MII body. Lens works just perfect. very sharp images. Regarding macro - using closeup adapter, getting perfect macro pictures.
