One of the best action/war movies made.

Excellent flick. The extra footage makes this one of the great WW ll movies made. The extra disk makes it a special addition to my library.

Close, but no cigar (even though there's a cigar in every scene)

The disc itself was fine. But it said to review the content:
Not a movie to get people interested in war movies, it's pretty dry.
Story is there (mostly) the actors did a good job for their role (sorry Mark, you make a better jedi than soldier)
Costumes/uniforms are pretty dang on point-firearms uses are shown well, not depicted well-such as only 1 entire scene it shows a gun being reloaded, thankfully it was the garand with its iconic ping. For some reason they have the cyclic rates swapped for the mg42 and mp40...if you know, you know why that be bothersome.

D day scene was done well. There's definitely some "what the heck was that moments" and classic Hollywood style gun fighting.

I have never seem this movie before, but based off war movies from similar era of creation, there's much better war movies to watch.
I will say, Lee Marvin makes a bad a** soldier, I just wish they were able to let his charector "loose". He really seemed held back. I think someone with a more calm demeanor would have played his part just fine.

All in all, intriguing, interesting, and somewhat informing-but for me, missed the mark (pun intended)
"Budget" movie aside, for those who like to watch the story, have fun. But in reality, if you havnt seen it yet, you havnt missed out

Not As Exciting As The Title Sounds

Although I love war epics and extended editions, this one just drags on and on with nothing too interesting happening. I still can't get past Mark Hamill’s role in Star Wars for his character to even begin to be believable, and he should definitely not be in this movie. The end was kind of a let down and just kind of ended abruptly, but comprehensible. This film does however cover almost all U.S. campaigns from Africa to Europe which is cool, but what are the chances of this. I would recommend watching the original release rather than the reconstructed, and if you have to see this you should rent it first, and save yourself time and money.

RATING: 3 / 5 STARS

Recommended War Films:
Downfall (A movie covering the last days and downfall of Nazi Germany) 5/5
Saving Private Ryan (I don't think I need to say anything) 5/5
Apocalypse Now Redux (In my opinion the best Vietnam war film ever made) 5/5
WWII Battle Front (A History Channel Documentary) 5/5

Stunning Reconstruction of the 1980 version

I like the fast action from beginning to end. From the landing in north Africa, Italy, and Normandy each attack has its special relationships develop and some are destroyed. A powerful film that stays on track for a powerful ending with the release of the condemmed in concentrations camps. Not for the weak of stomach. Some may find parts objectionable with the frank army talk but it seem appropriate here. The color and sound were redone(as shown in the commentary) in the 2005 remake plus 50 minutes of missing footage was added to make the move feel more complete. The commentary include add greatly to the experience when finished viewing the film. A must see for WWII buffs like me.Read full review...

The Big Red One makes one hard hitting statement regarding war. See it soon

The Big Red One is a movie that should be placed in the ranks of film " classics". The direction is great, the acting gritty, a superb cast along with a wealth of battle scenes made this movie more than compelling to watch. I am a long time fan of war movies and the action was exactly dead on. Lee Marvin is an actor that makes a movie hard hitting with just enough of an edge. The Big Red One is no exception. My family could also see the message regarding war and the anti war statement the movie made.Enjoy.Read full review...

the first honest war movie

This was the first war movie I saw as a young child that did not in any sense glorify death and destruction in and of war. The characters are absolutley perfect with Lee Marvin as the co of this squad. It simply put war at its most simpelist bare bones description:sane people deciding to kill each other for nothing more than political/religious/monitary gains and trying to decide who was on the side of right, made especially difficut because everybody knows that killing each other is wrong.Right? Its just a fabulous movie and anybody that is a WWII movie buff has already seen this movie.Any young person who, either pro or con,on the premise of war, should watch this movie for its biting wit and humor. It sort of puts MASH to shame and that origanal movie was terrific.I would suggest this movie to anybody and that is why I finally put it in my collection.Read full review...

Amazing New Version!

If you have seen or own the Original Theatrical Release of this movie you will be astounded at this Special Edition. 42 minutes have been added to the film, and with this footage it seems like you are watching a whole new movie. The part of the German Sergent (who was only a minor character in the Original Release) has a lot more scenes and becomes the German opposite of the Lee Marvin Character. There's a whole combat sequence shot at a Colosseum that was left out entirely from the original release. Not only were the new scenes added, but the sound effects of the firearms has been updated, adding more realism to the film. If you were a fan of the first version you will LOVE this new release.Read full review...

WW2 Golden Oldie

The main plot adds irony to the well told story of a platoon of the Big Red 1 as they fight for survival during WW2 combat from No Africa to Germany. One of Lee Marvin's best and well work seeing.

Better then the original

The added scenes worked. Many changed the vibe of the movie.

Sam Fuller had a lot to say.
