The Counterfeiters (DVD, 2008)

True story about operation Bernhard in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp in 1944-45. This was a master plan to counterfeit British Pound notes and American $100 bills. The original plan is said to have been to flood the market with counterfeit currency and debase the economies of both countries. However, there is no evidence that anything except subsidizing the German war effort (to some degree), and outright theft of the money was ever the plan. In addition to currency, documents of all types, I.D. cards, passports, travel documents, and numerous other public record documents were forged. It makes good sense that forged travel documents, I.D.'s, passports, and cash money, all go together at the end of a war you are losing. Especially - when you are traveling to South America, and might have to buy entrance. All together, at least $135 Million British Pounds were forged. Supposedly, only about $1M in U.S. currency was also made, but I have seen estimates that set that figure as high as $80M in counterfeit $100 bills.Read full review...

World War 2 Survival~Oscar Best Foreign Film excellent~

I recently saw a 100 year old man named Adolph Burger on an Sunday am show~ he was amazing~Adolph and Solaman Sorowisch were forgers ~.... SOLAMAN WAS A FORGER AND WAS ARRESTED FOR IT IN WW2 AND Ended up Forging British and American Dollars for the Germans~
Sally aka Solaman was a MASTER FORGER AND was arrested by the SS in 1939 and ended up a concentration camp because he was also Jewish~Adolph Burger was NOT a criminal but a jew so they end up in the SAME forgery factory~
there they stayed until 1943 where they were sent to a Camp where the Germans had a 'master plan' to forge British AND US currency to flood the market and ruin their economy but also as the German's began to loose the war the money became Handy for the Nazis to help buy things 'they needed"~ Karl Markovics is excellent as the MASTER Forger who used his criminal skills to stay alive~BURGER always made sure every one knew he was NOT a criminal~like the other forgers~ also~Russian and other forgers were all put in one place to help create the BIGGEST FORGERY FACTORY IN HISTORY~in Sachenhauzen Concentration Camp~ OVER 132 MILLION BRITISH POUNDS WERE PRODUCED THEIR work was so good the bank of england confirmed it was "real" when a NAZI agent tried to deposit in a SWISS BANK ~~the real story here is the forgers abiity to struggle and live to the end of the war~ VERY good plot and acting~ based ON REAL LIFE~ ADOLPH BURGER STILL has sample of his money and pass ports he forged for the Germans~ and visits schools in Germany to tell them about the horror of WW2. DVD IS IN GERMAN OR FRENCH (DUBBED IN FRENCH) BUT had English subtitles~ a great movie makes you forget you are reading the spoken word and this one does it!~ The forgers also produced passports which some of their Nazi Guards used to escape German as the War was being lost~(ironic plot fact)

I GIVE IT A SOLID 20 OUT OF 10 ~ OUTSTANDING~ also in the special features see the real ADOLPH still alive and his Artifacts he has managed to save the for the ages~

Such a good movie I went and bought the book.

One of those backwater WW II stories that is never/rarely mentioned because of the possible negative effect the Nazi counterfeiting scheme might have had on the Bank of England (which still stonewalls all knowledge about it) and the Allies financial systems was facinating to me.

Even though it has subtitles it is easy to follow. The sad plight of the prisioners and how they cope with their lot is well done.

I eventually found the book on which the movie was based for more details. Great story. I understand why it won an academy award.Read full review...

Best foreign film I have ever seen

Saw this movie with my daughter, and it was so good I bought it for her for her birthday. Although the dialogue is in German, the story was so compelling, and the visual effects so well done, that you forget that you are reading the lines. I think making the movie in the original language just adds to the feeling of actually being there. I really identified with several of the characters, to the point where I really hated the one who was going to betray them. Had to remind myself it was just a movie. Well worth it to buy this movie. The moral issues it raises are complex and will provide many hours of discussion afterwards.Read full review...

Movie or Documentary?

Most will start watching this DVD expecting a crime flick rather than the story of an important part of WWII history. Well written and filmed, it grips your attention to the end.

The Counterfeiters

I liked this movie. I like the detail that went into the process that the
prisoners went to create the fakes. The movie was only in French and German with English subtitles on both.
