Basically Entertaining With A Life Lesson Attached
The Craft is an entertaining movie about four Catholic High School girls who form a witches' coven in order to deal with their individual life problems. They remain the best of friends until the practical one, Sarah, realizes that they've bitten off more than they can chew by invoking the spirit on a May's eve. Their leader, Nancy, then becomes hostile and consumed by the entity inside her, taking its power through darkness and Sarah must invoke the spirit herself in order to fend for her life. The witchcraft portrayed in this film is highly inaccurate and does not reflect the true religion of Wicca. However, the life lesson found within this story of four friends cannot be ignored. Simply, what the movie seeks to tell us all is that we should never reckon with forces we don't fully understand, for there will be negative consequences. Furthermore, the film preaches a few other inevitable truths. When a gift is given, it should never be abused. Revenge is never the answer. Never attempt to find a quick fix for problems in your life. Humans should never attempt mastery over nature. Friendship is the most valuable gift of all. An absolute cult classic!
The craft has always been a personal favorite of mine since it was released. It is fun, entertaining, the characters are all great! From awkward, to becoming empowered, the characters, through rituals, gain what they so strong desired individually. This is a "careful what you wish for" Scenario. The movie is well produced and directed, the cast is too notch, but I have to admit one thing, there are a few cheesy lines here and there throughout the movie, but is easily overlooked because you become so easily engaged in this "witchcraft" Movie. The characters are very likable, and the storyline is pretty good, so any silly lines within the movie are easily overshadowed. This movie draws you in with a family moving to a new area, with a daughter starting a new high school. She obtains 3 new friends, due to what one might think is similarities. However, just as in real life, this new student meets three leaches that grab on to her, and just do their best to suck her life out of her. Good prevails!
