Pretty enjoyable one from Jet Li and Xie Miao

It's a good story with real Chinese scenes.

: Jet Li plays a Chinese cop who has to go undercover to infiltrate a gang of smugglers. To make it more believable he has to be arrested and escape from prison along with another criminal. The movie plays off in modern times, and doesn’t just include martial arts, but also gunplay and drama. Jet Li and Tze Miu deliver good performances as father and son in this action drama.

The movie’s time is divided between father and son until they are finally reunited. Starting off with a nice fight we can see Jet Li fighting in a harder style than that which you will see in movies like Once a Upon a Time in China (1991). The movie also shows that Kung Wei and his family loves each other very much but that Kung Wei isn’t around as much as his son would like him to be. Kung Wei gets arrested and we find out about his connection with the police and how he’s going to escape. After Kung Wei and a fellow inmate escape, they go and join a gang of smugglers. This being the mission, Kung Wei has to keep his identity secret. Jet Li plays a pretty standard guy who adopts the role of a criminal very well as he slowly gains the trust of his boss. Meanwhile, we see that his son and wife aren’t doing that great. Tze Miu can do some fancy moves and displays his fighting prowess against his fellow school pupils when they tease him about his father’s arrest. While Johnny tries to comfort his mom, a mysterious woman (Anna Fong) arrives who claims she’s a relative, but Johnny and his mom both know that she is actually a cop who wants to find out where Kung Wei is hiding out. She immediately starts caring for Johnny’s sick mother and becomes friends with little Johnny.

The movie tends be move along very slowly, especially when it comes to the arrival of Anna Fong. Lots of time is spent showing how much Johnny cares about his mother and how he misses his father. Anna Fong nearly becomes a mother figure and takes care of Johnny throughout the movie. On Kung Wei’s side, he has to deal with the gang's leader, Po Kwong (Yu Rong Guang). Many believe that Yu Rong Guang hasn’t yet received the credit he is due. If you wanna see him fight against Jet Li and show what he’s made of then you better not miss this film. Kung Wei does eventually meet up with his son in Hong Kong, but ends up having to watch his son being beaten without interfering. The movie may have slow parts, but when they start fighting it looks great. Yuen Kwai did a great job of giving Jet Li some a few nice fighting scenes. There is a big fight with nightsticks at the end that reminded me of the excellent gym scene in Kiss of the Dragon (2001). The movie ends off with Jet Li and Tze Miu fighting against Po Kwong and two accomplices and is certainly entertaining. One of Mark's favorite scenes in the latter fight is when Jet Li ties Tze Miu to a rope and uses him as a weapon! Quite an innovative fight I must say!

Jet Li fans will no doubt want to see this movie, but don’t expect a fight every other second. The movie has a very modern feel and placed too much emphasis on his family, thus adding too much drama in-between the action. Not a bad movie though, but neither a must.
