Marie Ponsott's Golden Book of Fairy Tales

I love this book. It is a collection of both rare and well-known fairy tales from all over the world. I had the book as a child and it was my mother's before that. Our original copy was lost when I was a teenager but I never forgot the stories and illustrations. I finally bought a copy to read to my 3-year old boy who loves stories. These are not short stories but traditionally complicated fairy tales with themes that sometimes push the boundaries of what is considered socially acceptable these days. Some of the stories are sexist and contain language that is no longer part of our vernacular. Some of the characters are mean to each other in ways distinctively different from the Disney stories that many of our children are used to. Fairy tales have a particular way of getting their point across. I'm not sure that makes sense but I don't know how else to explain it.
The artwork is gaudy and fantastic and I remember staring at the drawings for hours as a child. I bought it for the nostalgia and because I love fairy tales and am not afraid to explain uncommon things to my child.Read full review...

Stories of my childhood.

My grandmother read me stories from this book 60 years ago. I have always cherished them and now I have them back in this edition. Reading them brought back many memories. I wish I had had the book when my grandchildren were young enough to read them the stories.Read full review...

I was given a copy of this book as a child. It was my first Fairy Tale book and I loved it. It was lost and my husband found this copy and ordered it for me. It brought back many good memories. Not all tales end happily ever after and these aren't Disney versions. The fact that there are tales from all over the world make it unique.
