I bought the book because it was a required reading assignment for my college history class. The beginning was a bit slow and not very interesting, in fact I didn't even like any of the characters. As the story progressed I was brought into the characters hopes and dashed dreams for a better life. This is the most depressing book I have ever read. It was on the list of great books, so I thought I would read it. I would use it for kindling in my fireplace.
