Gulag is a MUST!

There are some stories we need to know if we are to consider ourselves as educated or (what used to be called cultured). The horrors of the system known as the Gulag, in which an enormous number of the Soviet people were incarcerated, and in which 66 million died (1917-1956) is a story which will be forgotten if we turn our backs.
An even more important consideration is that the tale Solzhenitsyn told is not just a horror story; it is a story with meaning and even a story with hope.
The original work, some 1,800 pages in 3 volumes would strain the patience of any normal person.
This edition, edited by Edward Ericson, is the one to read. It was approved by Solzhenitsyn, and it contains all that is essential. the paring down has been worked upon the mass of detail. What has not been lost is the philosophical and theological reflection which transforms this book from a piece of grisly non-fiction into a literary masterpiece.
Read it!
It is not for the enjoyment - you'll know far more than you want to know, but it is for experiencing the joy of being, in spite of degrading circumstances, human, and it proclaims the Truth.

The brutal interrogations methods designed to get YOU to CONFESS! And the forgotten millions that have perished from this reprehensible ideology Read full review...

Moving, engrossing book

I expected this book to be difficult, and it will require a second reading. But it's well worth the time. I'm learning a great deal about an experience I can hardly imagine--the sheer cold, starvation as policy, and the limits of human resilience. I am in awe.Read full review...
