Surprisingly Good

(For plot summary, click the link above - this is a review only.)

I am honestly shocked that I liked this film. Yes, I am a heterosexual male, and yes this is definitely what people would call a chick flick. However, it ended up being a very good film, with only a few moments of sickening saccharine (mainly when Jude Law was trying to act).

The cast was great. Jack Black didn't jump around and wiggle his appendages throughout the entire film - he managed to appear normal. Cameron Diaz was the most believable on-screen female I've ever seen; sorry ladies, but the way her emotions led her through an almost bipolar succession of dating philosophies (I love you, I hate you, hold me, don't touch me!) reminded me, very uncomfortably, of a couple of ex-girlfriends. Scary stuff, kiddies! Also, that chick, whose name I forget, from Titanic was really good, too. And no Celine Dion music this time, thank the gods! Rufus Sewell was malevolent as always, and Jude Law did not make me physically ill, which is a vast improvement over his last few films.

I would highly recommend this film as a date movie. It's got the corny stuff women crave, and it is boyfriend safe - no men were harmed during the testing of this product. Moreover, and pardon me for being serious for a moment, it is a pretty good story, with many interesting subplots woven together in a believable way.

Check it out.

Whose watching the dog?

I loved the storyline of Kate Winslet's Iris. I would have been perfectly content to have Iris (Kate Winslet) be the star of this movie rather than sharing the screen with Amanda (Cameron Diaz). They both did a good job but I always paid more attention when Kate was onscreen with Jack Black or Eli Wallach. My mind wondered whenever Cameron Diaz and Jude Law were onscreen. One moment Cameron and Jude are having a purely sexual relationship then the next they're madly in love? Kate Winslet and Jack Black was more believable because it started out as friends.

Throughout the movie (when my mind wondered), I found myself worried about the dog - whose watching the dog while Iris goes to the U.S.? Did Amanda feed the dog? Does the dog have water in his bowl? Why is Amanda packing when Iris is still in the U.S., whose going to watch the dog? Would you leave your dog with a perfect stranger? I would hope not.

Love This Movie

Wonderful (double) romantic comedy, set during the Christmas Holidays. Two women (played by two great stars) cross the globe to escape their broken relationships, then delightfully stumble into new ones.

Love this movie and watch it over and over again! The music is special and the story is a great tribute to Hollywood writers of the past. The story succeeds by creating four contrasting personalities who offer us a rich picture of love and its complications in the modern professional world.

Best of all it's a film about taking a chance in life and making the most of it. Truly a gem!

Well, it lives up to its name.

I bought this movie because my wife saw it in the movie theatre and she liked it. Once we recieved the movie, we watched it, and she was right. It was a great move. Not at all what I expected for a "chick movie." It was also nice to see Jack Black play a character that was not a bumbling idiot. I feel Jack Black is a better actor when he plays the more serious role. Cameron Diaz was good and Kate Winslet was absolutely adorable in this move. I recommend you purchase it as well, you cant go wrong and it would make a nice addition to your collection.Read full review...

Great feel-good romantic comedy for any time!

Set at Christmas but a fun story any time- two women swap houses to escape unhappy relationships. They get to know the men in each other’s lives, which leads to unexpected complications and new possibilities.
Cameron Diaz is all goofy charm, Jude Law is a bit off-balance but likable, Jack Black is sweet and funny and not too crazy, and Kate Winslet steals the show with humor, warmth and compassion. You want to cheer when she finally stands up for herself and her own happiness. Eli Wallach is funny and poignant as a veteran Hollywood screenwriter who receives well-deserved honors for his work.
Maybe jumping into instant rebound romances isn’t too wise but it makes for satisfying fantasy!

Expect the Unexpected

Yes, Jude Law and Cameron Diaz are in this movie and they play good part, but their story moves at an awkward pace. The absolute best part of this movie is the story of Kate Winslet and Jack Black. Their roles in this movie have depth of character, and really is the reason to watch. If for no other reason, watch it for their story alone.Read full review...

A holiday is a vacation! Not a REAL holiday

So people are confused, they don't seem to know what holiday this movie might be about! Is it about valentine's day? st patrick's day? st. switten's day? No it's about a bloody vaction (not to non brits: it's not really bloody).

Since this was a gift to my sister and I only watched it at a local theatre near you I don't knwo the names of the players in this little farce.

Basically it boils down to the following: 2 wonky women from 2 different places switch homes sinces they are so overstresseed from whatever it is they are stressed by they allow a complete and total stranger to live in their owm for the duration of the holiday. One goes from a frosty and charming English cottage to a way cool Los Angeles happening pad and the culture shock takes some getting used to (you've seen it before and done better) along the way the two women find love with one's brother and the other's friend...blah blah blah it ends happily enough if you like this sort of thing.

Get it if you have a girlfriend or a whimpy guy, I'm sure they will like this romantic comedy but it's just not my bag babby

A "Primitive" Look at The Holiday

Ok... this is a little different! I am not rating movies based on the performances, storylines, or tearjerker endings, but on their value in pleasing the primitive decor lover! My daughter bought this movie as a Christmas present for me just so I can visit one of my favorite movie places from time to time!

This movie ranks tops with me, and in all sincerity... it really is a sweet movie. There's some irresponsible drinking and intimacy, but no nudity and it really is a lovely story if you can get beyond the shallower themes of modern day love stories and stay for the deeper themes that the movie does eventually get to.

But... the English cottage in this movie is the REAL STAR!!! I can't take my eyes off of it and rewind often to get a better glimpse of color schemes! The vintage robin's egg blue of the kitchen cupboards is just beyond words!!! I must have that color in my home and am currently rearranging the content of my home to better compliment it.

I recommend The Holiday to anyone who loves the "prim", shabby, cottage look. You may not remember the story... though I think you will... but you'll never forget "Rosehill Cottage".

Movie review

I love this movie! This is the kind of movie Hollywood should make. No nakedness. No F bombs. Beautiful setting. Very romantic. My daughter and I see this together and love it!

Romantic chick flick

Okay, it starts off slow and drags. But if you can stay with it, it's fun.
A nice romantic comedy. Some scenes were hysterical. Most women could relate.
Definitely a chick flick or date movie.r>Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet made you root for them and for love. Christmas love - the most romantic of seasons - makes it even more special.
No violence, foul language or descriptive sex scenes so it is good for most ages.
I enjoyed and recommend viewing it but I doubt I would buy it or watch it again real soon.
It is a bit too long for me to see more than once.
I rate it as Good!!Read full review...
