The Hunger - interesting ...

It was good, but David Bowie plays a particularly small role. Overall the story was what seemed to be a typical 80s, 90s movie.

Dream-Like Vampire Flick

Fun vampire movie with a dream-like quality. Definitely plays more like a trippy eighties music video than a mainstream film, but there's a story in there somewhere, and it shows just enough to those staring at its surface for any onlookers to understand. Good stuff. David Bowie has a great screen presence, too.Read full review...

The Hunger

The movie is a slick, seductive non-traditional vampire movie, with a hint that the Miriam is much older (flashback to a moment in an airy room in ancient Egypt) than she seems. John is her latest lover; they hunt the underground clubs of New York, seducing, killing, feeding and disposing of their victims in a stylish and antiseptic manner; razor sharp ankhs as knives, no fangs and messy kills. The story really deals with Miriam's hunt for her next lover as John begins to age, rapidly, and what happens when eternal love is not quite the end it should be for both John and Miriam.

I liked the sexy, blood is lust and life and transient, versus love is pure and eternal and white and billowing breezes, dichotomy. It makes you think about the black and white/ good and evil simplicity.

I wish there had been more historical reference about John and Miriam, other than a single meeting in an 18th Century music room.

Overall, a great character piece for the late David Bowie as we watch him age to a very old man. If only he'd really gotten that chance.

The ultimate modern horror film!

I once owned the VHS version but someone stole it. I once had the soundtrack on vinyl, but it, too, was stolen. So I finally decided that I must own the DVD. "The Hunger" has always been in my all-time Top 10. Shot with gothic perfection and chock full of sexual undertones, it captures the cast & crew at their very best. We all want to live forever, but this film makes me happy to survive this long. The commentary by Tony Scott & Susan Sarandon is very detailed and informative. The opening sequence, featuring Bauhaus performing their classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead", is worth the price of admission alone. Superb!Read full review...

The Hunger Must see

This is a stand alone movie amongst other adult vampire movies, even by todays standards. 'David Bowie's' acting has never been great but he does a good stint in this.( I can say that coz I'm English, we all love him but know he can't act)!! And got to love the beautiful 'Catherine Deneauve', probably the best thing to ever come out of France (again I can say that coz I'm English..lol). The sound track is Bauhaus which gives it a decidedly eerie feel and adds a great modern touch to a timeless setting. Any movie buff should be proud to have this in their collection, and if you don't... hang your head in shame Sir... The cinematography is superb. Made in 1983 this movie was beyond it's time. If you don't like vampires don't worry it's not all this film has to offer, you will still love the tragedy of lost loves and beautiful images. This is a masterpiece. '"Do IT...Do IT".. Treat yourself and show your talent for having a great movie collection.Read full review...

The Hunger will eat you up!

If you think stylish vampire movies are a recent thing, watch The Hunger, staring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandan. Tony Scott set this film as a highly stylized, MTV-like, video, but it was around well before MTV. Campy, cool and creepy, it adds a new variation on the vampire genre, both high style and disco. A great period piece, it takes place in Manhattan in a house/mansion we can only dream about. There's also lesbian sex, done very erotically, so it's not for kids at all. So if you want to see a vampire movie with style, get The Hunger.Read full review...
