A Taut Political Thriller

"The Kingdom" was likely one of the best (not to mention highest grossing) Middle East war movies of 2007. While others like "In the Valley of Elah" and "Valley of the Heart" focused on the after effects of war in America, "The Kingdom" takes viewers into the thick of the action following a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia.

Peter Berg crafts a taut political thriller that gives equal time to both the American and Saudi side of the story: the ideas of motivation and family are explored on both sides of the line. Similarly, the climax, in which one FBI agents is kidnapped by terrorists, plays like the crackling chase in "Children of Men."

Still, there are elements that keep "The Kingdom" from being a complete success. Jason Bateman as Agent Adam Leavitt is completely unsympathetic, while Jennifer Garner is completely unbelievable as a forensic expert who flinches every time the attack is replayed on film, but has no problem exhuming the victims' bodies.

For its faults, though, "The Kingdom" still plays like a live wire: sucking viewers in with a promise of action, while subtly hinting as larger sociopolitical issues.

The Kingdom

A team of U.S. government agents is sent to investigate the bombing of an American facility in the Middle East. There is much to like in The Kingdom. Nice performances, a slightly-new take on the buddy-cop story. There is a big terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia. Some FBI agents led by Jamie Foxx, fast talk and bamboozle their way into the country to investigate, where they team up with two Saudi cops. There then follows a small amount of detective work, some interesting political manoeuvring and two really rather well-done shoot outs.Read full review...

Solid movie, balance of action and geopolitical lessons

During the beginning credits, we learn the entire US-Saudi history. I learned quite a bit from the timeline. This was a fast-paced, smart, action film sprinkled with geopolitical lessons throughout. This is what Syriana should have been. If you like the pace of the Bourne trilogy, you'll enjoy this film. The cast is exceptional, but the Justin Bateman character was a little over the top and annoying. Good thing he didn't have too many scenes. Jamie Foxx didn't play the team leader as too tough and brash. Jennifer Garner definitely used her training from Alias and was great. The special features was packed. I found the behind the scenes of the military training the cast received was humorous. The picture quality and sound of the DVD was great, especially during the final battle scenes. I'd definitely add this to my collection.Read full review...

The Kingdom is explosive entertainment !!!

Peter Berg is brilliant in directing an excellent cast lead by Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner and Chris Cooper in this amazing look inside American and Saudi relationships after 9/11. With events that closely follow actual events that have followed in a post 9/11 world, the movie actually shapes up to be one of friendship and mutual respect for two agents trying to find the truth in a very guarded intelligence matter of state.Read full review...

An eye-opener

An active duty military buddy told me that during his stay in Saudi Arabia, one of the Saudi troops told him that if it came to killing a fellow Muslim or an American, regardless of the circumstances, the American would die. My friend told me he was shocked, and that changed his perspective on the alliance between the two countries. This movie is action packed and nail biting.Read full review...

Great movie

Jamie Fox gives a pretty good performance as well as Jennifer Garner and Chris Cooper. The story and script is great, and the action is gripping. It's about a couple of attacks in Saudi Arabia in which a couple agents end up dead, so an FBI team of four is sent to investigate the scene and run into trouble. good directing and good performances along with a good story make for an enjoyable experience.Read full review...
