The Legend of Dragoon is anything but a Legend

Sony's attempt at an RPG turned out to be a good one. Taking some classic RPG elements and adding a twist. Sony successfully makes The Legend of Dragoon an amazing and challenging RPG. You play as Dart. A young and ambitious teenager who gets tossed into the battle to save the world once his "girlfriend" gets kidnapped. Along they way you meet various characters all who add their own personality to the story. Dart discovers that he is a Dragoon Knight and uses this power to save the world.

The battle system is very different compared to other RPG's. When the player attacks, they must press a button that appears on screen in order to continue the attack and to successfully complete the combo. This adds a whole new depth to the combat and makes it more involving.

The only part of the game that might make it more difficult (and add many hours of game play) is the leveling system. All the party members share earned experience. (example: You have 3 people in your party and earn 15 exp in battle. therefore each character gets 5 exp) This can be really painful when you're trying to level up before a boss battle, or to just get stronger.

The game spans 4 Discs and has fully Rendered Backgrounds (like the Final Fantasy series (7,8,9). The cut scenes are plentiful and are full CG with voice acting, that actually adds to the video rather then taking away from it. They're just that good.

The legend of Dragoon, although with it's weak points (leveling system) is a great RPG. If you want to try something that isn't made by SquareEnix but made with the same quality, The Legend of Dragoon is a great choice. When you finally beat the final boss, and watch the last cut-scene. You'll feel that you've accomplished something great. And start hoping for The Legend of Dragoon 2.

Fantastic Throwback of a game! Could have been a Final Fantasy contender if they kept on it!

What an amazing game. I adore this game so much. It brings back the simpler days when things were easy. The story of Dart and his journey throughout 4 discs is amazing. And we're talking 4 full discs, this isn't Final Fantasy where the last disc was the final dungeon. You still got plenty of game left once you hit that 4th disc. The cutscenes and graphics were ahead of the time when it came out. Read full review...

I'm a diehard for the classics.

A friend let me borrow her copy of the game, and after three hours of playing, I was hooked. How could I have missed this when it first came out?

Easily, I didn't own a playstation back then. XP

I love the story line, and the graphics, new and epic for its time. The game play is quick to pick up, if not a bit annoying when I can't hit the action response just right, especially for the more complex moves learned later on. But nonetheless it's very easy to understand and pick up.

I don't know much about the development of the game, but I've read somewhere that it took 100 people 2 years to make, or something like that.

The graphics and game play are similar to some of the Final Fantasy games, as well as the random battle method of playing. However there are three different 'grounds' to play on: The world map leaves you to follow a preset path that opens at various intervals in the game (the annoying thing being you can't pass through an area to get through another, you have to go through the area to get to the other area), the battle map which is something like Final Fantasy with the attack, guard, item and run options, later complimented with Dragoon state and under special circumstances Special option. And third your area state, where you interact with NPCs and wander around looking for special things and random stuff.

The soundtrack is entertaining. I personally like the opening theme "If You Believe" even though you can only hear a snip-it of at the game menu.

4 discs of epic fun! And definitely has +10 in replay value. How many games out there nowadays honestly have a replay value? Ok, so I'm a bit biased.

A Hidden Gem

Unfortunately the PlayStation was at the end of its lifespan when they decided to release Legend of Dragoon. However, the game pushes everything to the limit. The story, gameplay, graphics, all of it compound into an excellent RPG that could have been a good contender against the Final Fantasy series. The battle system switches it up in a good way so that you have to stay focused on the task at hand with the powerful Additions. Using Dragoon Magic? Even better.

Highly recommended game for anyone who enjoys RPGs.

Dragoon is a really good game just not the best.

Sony Legend of Dragoon is a pretty good RPG and was reveloutinary at the time.

Story.
The story is the weakest part of the game falling over every Japanese RPG cliche in the book. Basically it follows Dart who has return to his adoptive home town after failing to find the black monster which orginally killed his parents. But his home town has been burn down and his child hood friend Shana kidnapped. Dart rescues Shana but one thing leads to another and Dart finds out that he is a dragoon, a person who has an ability to transformed into magic armor with wings. Again the story is cliche is the black monster one of the charecters helping Dart, yeap. Is his girlfriend really a serious danger yeap. And you see these plot points coming a mile away, while playing it I said the only way it could get more cliche is if Darts dad comes out still alive and the ring master of the bad guys, I had my face in my palm while switching out disc 3.

Graphics our pretty decent for PS1, not has good has some of the later Final Fantasy but pretty good, what makes it an achivment is that you have a lot of fully voiced and computer animated CGI scenes something rare at the time.

Sound wise you get some decent music and you get charecters that actually have some chatter during battle, something we take for granted now days but back then pretty cool for an RPG.

On the gameplay Legend of Dragoon is pretty standard JRPG you follow the story, complete task, and level up your charecter. What makes it unique is how you level up, while you still have a base levle what matters most is the attack combo you can equip.

When you attack a little square appears pressing X at the right time will let another square appear, when you do all the button presses right your charecter will finsih off the combo for extra damage. The more successful combos you do the more powerful the current combo becomes, and you can unlock harder combos.

Also doing combos right builds up your SP bar up that allows you to take dragoon form that allows for special attacks and magic. Like the combos the more you use Dragoon form the more powerful it becomes.

In the end legend of dragoon is not the best RPG on the PS1, but a pretty damn good one and is defintley worth checking out.

Excellent, as always.

My experience purchasing the game was very good. Product was as advertized, better even, as the disks were in pretty much perfect condition. The price was a steal compared to local shops selling the same game. The game itself is still the jewel it was in early 2000. I look forward to playing it through to the end, and reliving the noatalgia.Read full review...

Compelling

The games PS1 graphics are offputting at first, even when PS1 was my primary system I was hesitant on my first attempt to play this game.
Once the story unfolds, companions start being added to your team and the world opens wide in an array of hand drawn backgrounds, in depth cut-screen footages, the game takes a whole new shape. This was around the age of 10 or 12 , now I'm 28 and the game sticks in my memory, playing it again on emulation provoked me to own a physical copy of this nostalgic Legend.Read full review...

Legend of Dragoon~!

I used to own this game a very long time ago but I never passed the storyline completely. However, after all this years I am still intrigued & that's why I've bought it again~! (I plan to complete it this time no matter what!)

Anyhow, it has a very different never before seen (at least for me) combat mode, where you need to have perfect timing with the controls so successfully perform the attacks. For me it wasn't a piece of cake and therefore it was challenging.

In general, the game is a classic RPG that mixes fantasy & reality, starring a mercenary (which happens to be our main character) with a mission: becoming a Dragoon + battling the forces of evil around him & rescuing his innocent childhood friend, a girl who might be the source of chaos??

In love!!

My mothers Christmas present this year. It’s one of her favorite games. It showed up early, just in time for Christmas and in perfect condition! The only sign it’s been used is that it’s without the plastic wrapping. It’s wonderful, and I would definitely recommend it.Read full review...

Great long game, I f you like breath of fire games you will like this

Great game, at the time when I was younger I started this game cause I was tired of final fantasy 9 and it’s incredibly long load scenes. This game was much more forgiving on load times and is a great story to play through especially if you are a breath of fire fanRead full review...
