A Good Remake

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was an OK game for the N64. I didn't really enjoy it too much and I didn't believe it deserved all the praise it got but it was a revolutionary title in the Zelda franchise. However, the Nintendo 3DS remake is a way better experience. The new visuals, gyroscope aiming, and inventory management really make this remake a whole lot better than the original. It sounds good, the controls are good, and the classic music throughout the game really sell it. The game also comes with the more challenging Master Quest, a version of the game that is mirrored, has different dungeon layout, and you take more damage. Master Quest takes a game that is mediocre in difficulty to 11. Even though it has all this good stuff there are a few gripes I still have and some new ones too. The horse race for Epona is still very challenging. If you just touch Ingo's horse, you slow down and it doesn't help that Ingo has infinite spurs. The other thing is how the inventory is handled. The actual inventory is good but I keep wanting to press START to go into it when you have to press a tab on the touch screen. My final complaint I will list is that the map is on the top screen on the corner when it can be on the bottom screen and be bigger and show more detail than the world map that is on the bottom screen. All in all if your a returning fan of Ocarina of Time or a new comer to the 3D Zelda scene or new to Zelda in general, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is worth it.Read full review...

Without Nostalgia, it's Bad

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is only a good game if you hold some form of nostalgia about it. At the time of this review being written, the Legend of Zelda franchise has gone leaps and bounds ahead of this title in terms of gameplay. Entries such as The Wind Waker, Breath of the Wild, and Twilight Princess are outright superior to Ocarina of Time in terms of gameplay and graphics. This is only to be expected, as Ocarina of Time released over two decades ago at the time this review's writing. Those who love this entry to the series only enjoy it due to nostalgia, and the fact that it was a massive technological leap in terms of 3D video games when it was released. But if you hold no such nostalgia for it, and have played newer Zelda games, it isn't worth your time.

This version specifically is not a remake, it is a re-release, and as such it does not improve on the original title in terms of gameplay. The original Ocarina of Time was created for the Nintendo 64, which allowed the gameplay to revolve around the player sitting down and dedicating a good chunk of time to playing. A handheld console like the 3DS allows gameplay to revolve around short gaming sessions and short bursts of plot and story, this does not mesh well with Ocarina of Time.

You should not purchase this game.

Return to Hyrule in 3D

I have always been a fan of this Zelda installment. The graphics are better than the N64 version, since the 3DS has better operating system. The game designers have done a great job of using the duel screens to keep the action up top, and your items, lifemeter, money, and maps on the bottom screen. I'm a little torn about the 3D part. When using 3D, things look amazing. You will need to adjust the intensity to your comfort, and you do need to keep your face and the screen still. The problem comes when aiming your shooting weapons (slingshot, hookshot, and bow... that stuff). To adjust your aim you can tilt the 3DS unit to make the screen move (almost like turning your head to look out a window). Tilting the screen will cause the 3D screen to give a bad double image. So... you can aim old-school with the stick, or you need to turn off the 3D and tilt the unit. The tilt feature is awesome in 2D mode. Much faster and accurate the using the joystick. That is my only bad comment about the game. A bonus for game is having the Master Quest built in. Beat the original game, and unlock the Master Quest. In MQ the world has been mirrored (everything is opposite). Link is even right handed. The dungens are a lot harder, and you take damage a lot faster (always have a spare fairy in a bottle). Over all I'd highly recommend this game. If I could give 4 and a half stars I would. Enjoy!Read full review...

The Legend enters the Third Dimension

It's not an easy thing, remaking such a beloved video game as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Is it even possible to improve upon a game that many already consider to be perfection? With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Nintendo proves it can be done. For those who have never experienced this classic game before, players are introduced to the young Hylian Link, who is forced to embark on a perilous journey to rescue the young Princess Zelda after she is kidnapped by the evil Ganondorf. Players must master the power of the legendary Ocarina of Time in order to chase this merciless villain and his royal prisoner into the dark, bleak future. While the story remains untouched, Nintendo has made a few dramatic improvements, the largest of which is to the game’s graphics. The game makes excellent use of the 3DS’ graphical processing power, allowing gamers to see the beauty of Hyrule in a whole new light. The 3DS capabilities of the console make this journey even more immersive. The already excellent boss battles truly come to life in full, glorious 3D. There is really nothing like watching an enemy’s arrow fly straight through your console’s screen, while dodging an ill-willed spear lunging straight towards you. Despite this exciting feature, gamers should use the 3D cautiously; playing for long periods of time can seriously hinder or blur your vision. In addition, the console’s gyroscope function can occasionally cause the view of the game to falter. Luckily, the circle pad can be used as an alternative to the gyroscope, which can quickly and easily be turned off. While Nintendo gave the graphics a complete overhaul, they left the legendary soundtrack virtually untouched, which once again proves their mastery of past and present. While I personally believe there is no such thing as a “bad Zelda game”, none of the franchise’s subsequent entries could match the fluidity of OoT’s excellent lock-on system, which returns untouched in this fantastic update, along with a much less irritating Navi. Of course gamers can expect the memorable cast of characters from the original OoT, alongside the original epic quest, which can take close to 30 hours to complete in its entirety. However, if that isn’t enough for you, Nintendo has packed in the “Master Quest”, a much more difficult version of the game, which unlocks at the end of your first playthrough. Whether you’re riding through Hyrule Field on Epona, or chasing Ganondorf through time with the power of the Ocarina, Nintendo proves that the game which defined an entire generation is still as fresh and entertaining as it was 13 years ago.Read full review...

A great port of a great game.

This is a port and a port it shall be. I never thought Nintendo would go back to production and try creating a newer version of the classic. If you ask me, I'm glad they didn't. All I wanted was to play this game, which I love, in a handheld. Backseat of a car, at the buss stop, waiting in line at some appointment with my ophthalmologist; all glorious places now that I can proceed through the Ice cavern instead of going page to page in some meaningless magazine that probably tries to make me feel bad for not being a millionaire, good-looking or both.

This works people, the analog stick lets you control link even better than you did with that bulky Nintendo 64 controller. The entire adventure is there to be experienced. And more, that bonus for lucky ones who could had pre-ordered Zelda Wind Waker—named Zelda Master Quest—is present and should be unlocked to anyone who finishes the game once. Good nostalgia pack with a few bonus, I'm sold. It all depends on how bad is your case of the disease. If nostalgia has got you pretty bad, yield and go to the nearest shop and make things right. If not, save for something better, it's just a port anyway. There'll probably be millions of them in a few years.

Zelda is Life!!

This was arguably the best game for the Nintendo 64 back in the day and it shows. This version is for the 3DS and 16 years after the original was released, it still holds up! The graphics have ben upgraded from the N64 version so it doesn't look so dated, but the gameplay is as I remembered it from my youth. The story takes place in the legendary land of Hyrule, you are Link - The Hero of Time... and the evil Ganondorf has captured the Triforce of Power. It is up to you to defeat the evil beast, reclaim the Triforce of Power and restore order to Hyrule once again! If you like Zelda or are just looking for a solid title for your 3DS, you cant go wrong with Ocarina of Time, there are plenty of Zelda titles but this one stands out as one of the best!Read full review...

The Perfect "First Game" & The Perfect "First Zelda Game"

Have... Have you really not heard of this, or played this game?

It was the first game I remember playing as a child on Nintendo 64. This is my favorite game of all time. While part of that is nostalgia driven, this game is generally a great game!

Great story, great game play, has a good, but fair challenge (it's super easy after you've beaten the game 50+ times).

Truly, this is a great game for children. The main character is a child, which helps children identify with it, and you can name the character whatever you like.

I'm rambling a little with no real direction here. This is a great game, whether it's someones first game, or just their first Zelda game, this is not only a great introduction to the series, but it's just a great game to play first.

I'm stunned that you are reading my crappy review instead of one of the million of other reviews on this game.

You can't go wrong. Many of the issues from the N64 version have been fixed, graphics look nice, and playing in 3D is pretty awesome.

Seriously, have you really not played this game? Lol

if you ever wanted to play OoT on the go, then get this game.

The gameplay for the remake is very similar to the original version, albeit with some modifications made to the game. One new feature is the use of the touch screen to switch out items, boots, and tunics. Also, the touch screen is used at times to play the Ocarina notes. The game uses the system's gyroscopic technology to look around and aim the player's bow, boomerang, hookshot, longshot and slingshot in first-person mode, unless the player chooses to use the classic analog stick control to aim. The 3DS version has the modified Master Quest dungeons and mirrored overworld in addition to the original game, and a new "Boss Challenge" mode that allows the player to fight all of the bosses one at a time, or in sequential order, while the Master Quest has its own version of the "Boss Challenge" mode, where the boss arenas are mirrored and enemies will do twice the usual amount of damage. Another new addition is the inclusion of optional brief video clips called "Visions" that serve as casual hints in case some new players get lost or have trouble solving the game's numerous puzzles. It was also revealed that the Stone of Agony is replaced with the Shard of Agony, which serves the same purpose, only with a sound signal to inform the players of secrets nearby. This is due to the fact that there is no equivalent to the rumble feature on the 3DS. The Iron Boots and Hover Boots can now be equipped on one of the item buttons instead of switching the boots in the equipment sub-screen.Read full review...

LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME, GREATEST VIDEO GAME OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!

I have not played the 3DS version of this game any more than turning it on to make sure it worked for feedback purposes, but being that it's a clone of the N64 version I didn't have any issues to write this review (except for the master quest which I cannot comment on). But seriously, wow, this game by FAR is ARGUEABLY and probably IS the GREATEST VIDEO GAME OF ALL TIME! The graphics are wonderful, it's the first 3D world for Link, you can ride a horse, the game is HUGE, it's very challeging (Especially the water temple, and being how annoying the menu system was for the N64 version, I'm looking forward to experiencing that temple with what looks like improved control for switching items on the 3DS system. (that is probably my only gripe about the N64 version), the dungeons are awesome, the enemies are great, items, secrets, games and side missions, all things that have become a staple of the series. The sound is great, the music is great, the contrl style is good, very easy to use, and the control style for this game has basically become the norm for every Zelda game that has followed it (Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword). There are a lot of things to do in this game, so if you don't feel like going forth on your quest to save Hyrule, hunt for some Skultula's (at night) or go fishing, or collect some chickens, or just go exploring on the gigantic hyrule field. There is seriously so much to do in this game, it's truly great. So much bank for your buck. Seriously, did I mention this is THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME! Ride Epona, or play a tune on your Ocarina, and go back and forth between time (7 years) as the need arises, to get more items and unlock special things within the game. Find heart containers, etc...etc... This game should DEFINITELY be in your collection. No, no, IT SHOULD! BUY IT! You won't regret it! How can you call yourself a gamer without THIS ONE!? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! You absolutely can't go wrong with this one! (Unless the game doesn't work, in which case you may need to contact the seller you bought it from, but mine works so I'm very happy). No, wait, what are you doing still reading this review!? Ridiculous! Stop reading and go bid on this item! Get an N64 version or the Gamecube collectors version, or the 3DS version, whatever, it doesn't really matter what platform, but you need to play this gmae! SERIOUSLY! (Oh, by the way, with the Gamecube collectors version you'll have 4 classic Zelda titles to choose from, the original, Zelda II, The Adventure's of Link, Majora's Mask, and this one of course. I was never a huge fan of Majora's Mask though I really didn't give it much of a chance I guess because I didn't like the pressure of being timed on everything the entire time. But no okay, I guess it's good if you kept reading because I may have given you some information that you didn't know. Yeah, you can mess with chickens too! It's great to mess with the chickens. Ever since Link to the Past (SNES) I've loved to do that. But no, great game across the board. DID I MENTION GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME! TRY IT!Read full review...

A fresh re-release of the Greatest Video Game of all time.

Ocarina of Time, the game that went down in history. At the time of it's release in 1998 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time stunned the world and video game players worldwide while at the same time set the standard that all RPG games would then follow from thereafter. From the full fledged 3D over-world, the in depth story line from the graphics and characters right down to the complexity that all Zelda games hold true to, this game did it all WAY ahead of its time. Although it has been released two times after it's original release this fourth re-iteration of the game just proves once again that this game continues to live on even more than 10 years after its debut. While still holding onto the original story line and game play Nintendo has still managed to add just enough new material and functionality to the game to keep it interesting to those who may have even played this game all the way through before. The game is filled with beautifully polished 3D rendered graphics, complex and directionally oriented sounds and very fluid and accurate controls. This game is a perfect rendition of a Classic Zelda game and all that Nintendo's latest technology has to offer. There is something for everyone in this game and I would recommend that you buy it if you already own a 3DS or are considering to get one. This game alone should be the deciding factor to get a 3DS system if you are still considering it.Read full review...
