Stunning Production. Unforgettable film.
The Miracle Worker (1962) Director Arthur Penn’s stunning film rendition of the stage play, written by William Gibson. Though the story is based on Helen Keller’s 1903 autobiography, the film is actually about her childhood teacher, Anne Sullivan. Hired to be Helen’s tutor, Sullivan patiently teaches an out-of-control Helen how to sit properly at the dinner table, not to mention the meanings of words using hand signs. Two seemingly impossible tasks. But with determination and resilience, Sullivan reaches Helen in a miraculous breakthrough. Academy award-winning performances by actors Anne Bancroft as Anne Sullivan and 15 year old Patty Duke as Helen Keller. The key scene is the 9 minute wrestling match between Helen and Anne in the Keller dining room. Lesson to be learned: “Obedience without understanding is a blindness too.” Outstanding supporting performances by actors Victor Jory as Captain Keller and Inga Swenson as Kate. Superb soundtrack music composed by Laurence Rosenthal. Filmed in compelling black and white by cinematographer Ernesto Caparros. Have a box of Kleenex handy for the ending. Grade A+

Validating Ivy Green
Visiting Ivy Green prompted the eBay purchase of the DVD as the gift shop there was out of DVDs the day we visited. Purchasing this DVD was about half the cost of a purchase in the gift shop. The movie was powerful. Great acting talent by all, especially the young Patty Duke. The filming sets were not very accurate to the real buildings that still exist, but that had very little impact on the story flow or story impact. Spoiler alert - the pump scene was very accurate. A nice replacement for my older one.
