PT-Cruzer reviews The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story.

Syd Barrett died in July, and upon hearing the news of his death, I began a Pink Floyd retrospective, as this band was a favorite of mine, their music providing the soundtrack to many trips and adventures which I embarked on in my youth.

I began my retrospective by reading Nick Mason's book Inside Out, and I then wanted their music and videos to create a chronigraphical perspective to accompany the facts from the book.

Since Syd was only with the band for the first two albums, it is extremely difficult to obtain video of the band with Syd during that period of time.
This DVD provides an excellent portrait of him, with rare footage of him, along with comments from band members, friends, musicians and journalists.

What I found of particular interest, were the thoughts and impressions from Roger Waters. His insights and observations of him were quite interesting and profound. His description of this bright and brilliant young musicians short career were quite poigniant, and delivered with humor, reverence, and deep respect. Most haunting were the recollections of Syd's visit to EMI studios, just at the moment Pink Floyd were recording the song Shine On You Crazy Diamond for the Wish You Were Here album, a song written about Syd.

My only dislike, is that there was not more video of the band playing together during that period. But, it is for this reason that I purchased Pink Floyd London 1966-67, also on eBay, which itself merits another review.

syd barreett story

i was always aware that syd was the groups founder. and when he died , i needed to know more about him. i was shocked to find out that he had lost his mind at such a young age. i pretty much bid for the first dvd i found on ebay. the dvd is great, i really watch it any chance i get, its like a great book that you cant put down. i had heard arnold layne as a young chap in texas during the mid 70's and was freaked out at that style of rock music. i think he was great, but i dont think the floyd would would have been as big had he been the main man. the dvd shows early days and gradually goes to where the lsd fried his brain. i want more dvd's on syd cause i cant get enough. dvd made me buy his solo albums such as madcap laughs and barrett. you should bid for dvdRead full review...

Shine On!

THis is a really good introduction to the pre Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd. The more you raed this book the more you feel sorry for Syd, though you probably never met him, you feel like you do from reading this book, but the irony of it is that the book gives you the sense that those that knew him didn't really KNOW him. I don't believe that he was a genius just different but then isn't everybody?Read full review...

Perfect

Loved seeing the old footage of Syd Barrett, and hearing the opinions of the remaining band members.

I initially bought the DVD as my husband is a huge Pink Floyd fan, and so am I now that I've learned their background and the story behind Wish You Were Here.Read full review...
