Outstanding combat simulation mechanics make this game a fun keeper.

This review is for a PC platform version of the 1990 Microprose/Paragon Punisher game. The picture and title are completely wrong and different platform and games entirely. The picture shows a genesis version and the review title shows a Nintendo version.

This game while primitive is outstanding because of the ingenuity behind the combat simulation it offers. Many games have been resurrected on newer 8 bit platforms that follow after this style. It is popular because it puts you in control of crime fighting from the perspective of the greatest crime fighter in Marvel history.

Your job is to travel to crime locations provided in mission briefings to earn enough cash to find where the evildoer Kingpin is hiding. You can manually drive the Punisher crime van or tell it what intersection to drop you at. A map, technical supplement, and manual are almost a must for this game and it is copy protected. If you own it just download the unlocked abandonware.

You have three modes, and eight directions to move in. It is compatible with a joystick. You can drive the van, head out on foot, or if at a pier venture underwater for some more close combat. You can talk to friendly characters to get some clues and have a shot at higher rank missions not found in Punisher garage briefings.

The real fun comes when Punisher unearths the hoards of baddies that populate Manhattan's underground. A given mission will have him pitched against 5-20 bad guys. You must watch for civilian lives and the battle can be city wide as you are not restrained to one building and the enemy AI will usually pursue you. Its a kick to go through this game and at least try everything. It is a personal favorite since I was introduced to it in grade school, and I recommend finding this golden oldie for your own enjoyment. Microprose games of this era can be a pain to get a license of though. Good luck, and remember Frank Castle prides himself on his ability to not get injured on the job :D!

Punisher

Sweet old school arcade style game. Game is a little short, but for a punisher fan you can't get much better.
