Buddy Holly...Paul's movie.

This is a must have for any fan of Buddy Holly and told by people who knew him as opposed to the Hollywood version which entertaining as it was is fiction....this dvd was very insightful and obviously put together with a lot of love and a desire to set the record straight...it shows Buddy to be an engaging young man with a lot of ambitious talent and one of the things that is also poignant it that this movie allows the drummer of the crickets to have his day in court regarding what a serious musician he is and was along with the bass player and all who worked with Buddy....and of course...Paul gets a few words in there as well...I have a lot of music dvds and this is a personal favorite....it's actually as fun to watch as the Hollywood movie and certainly more informative...Read full review...

The REAL Buddy Holly Story

In 1975, Columbia Pictures released a movie titled "The Buddy Holly Story" starring Gary Busey. While the film was entertaining, it was hardly the truth.

In 1986, Sir Paul McCartney, together with the original Crickets (Buddy's group which influenced the Beatles to take their name from) decided it was time to set the record straight on what was real and what was fiction.

Without giving away any spoilers, a number of things in the 1975 movie are fiction including:

1. There were 3 Crickets, not two.
2. Their names were incorrect in the movie; the real names are J.I. Allison, J.B. Muldin and Sonny Curtis.
3. The Crickets did NOT sing as shown in the movie - any backup singing was done by either the Picks or The Roses.
4. There is no mention of Norman Petty in the "Buddy Holly Story. Most of Holly's clasics were recorded in Petty's studio in Clovis, N.M. Buddy spent a lot of time there.
5. Buddy's parents did NOT object to his music - in fact, they supported it.
6. The station shown in the movie, KDAV, did exist; however they supported Buddy's music - he had a show there called "Buddy and Bob"....the group did play at the roller rink, but there were no broadcasts.

For anyone interested in Buddy Holly, his music and career, The REAL Buddy Holly Story is "must" to have. I first bought it on VHS, then Laserdisc, and
now have the DVD copy.

Since this documentary was produced in 1986, it is unfortunate that some of the people have passed away.

Although the documentary does not focus on Buddy's last days, the Surf Ballroom, where Buddy gave his last performance on February 2, 1959 still stands and appears as it did when he was there. There is an annual show every February 2, dedicated to the three performers who died shortly after the show: Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) and Ritchie Valens.

There are seveal Holly documentaries (mostly not avaiable for sale). I have them all and "The REAL Buddy Holly Story is among the best.

Very nice look into the life and music of Buddy Holly

Good DVD overall. If you are a fan of Buddy Holly you will certainly enjoy learning more of the true history of Buddy's rise and his influence on Rock n Roll history. It's probably not fair to say the "Buddy Holly Story" with Gary Busey is inaccurate and not a good movie as Paul McCartney hints at the start of this DVD. In fact i believe this is a great companion piece to the Buddy Holly Story. That movie was for true entertainment and keeping that in mind there was only so much time to convey the story. Within this DVD you get more of the life of Buddy but it doesn't flow and it's not particurally entertaining outside of hearing the "details" of how the music was made. In short if you are the kind of person that enjoys watching commentaries on the special feature of a movie then you'll love this DVD. The interviews with the Crickets are outstanding. I was very moved watching those moments. The parts with Paul McCartney are interesting but by far the weakest part of the DVD.Read full review...

The Real Buddy Holly Story (DVD, 2004)

I felt this was a pretty good documentary. A must if you are a Buddy Holly fan. What I liked most was all the rare personal films and photos of Holly. Including rare footage of him with Elvis, on tour in Europe, and a more famous clip of him on the Ed Sullivan show. There are many interviews or
reminiscences by family, friends and members of the Crickets. These I liked, but to a lesser degree as some go on for quite a while and to me are not as exciting as footage of Buddy himself. . Alot of Buddy's old stomping grounds were shown, including an old recording studio, and places where he hang out, as they looked today or at least in more recent times. It was hosted by Paul McCartney, and he does a pretty good job.

Sir Paul tells it like it was.

Gary Busey was very entertaining in his performance as Buddy but very off the mark as far as a realistic portrayal. This video is the real deal told by those who knew Buddy best. Buddy is gone but his music lives on. A true musical legend.Read full review...

True to life!

The way Buddy's life was depicted was as true to the norm as possible!
I enjoyed his struggles to get to the top in his life!
Too bad it had to end so early and tragically!

The Truth

A must have for any real Buddy Holly fan.
Paul Mc Cartney did his homework well.
It far surpasses that Hollywood garbage with Gary Busey.
