Epic and amazing.

The cartoon is no better than its previous LOTR one, but it’s still good and worth it, even with certain book references and the fact that lord of the rings actually got a cartoon, but not Harry Potter, because for a cartoon, HP only got animated illustrations. Read full review...

One of the best animated adventures ever made

I bought this dvd to replace my vhs version. It's still in good shape but nowadays I prefer the dvds when I can find them. I also must say dvds seem more colorful than vhs and this one was.
The Lord of the Rings has been one of my favorite stories for years. But I think this one is my most favorite because it the final part where the ring is destroyed and peace is restored. Also, there seems to be more action, like the battle at Minas Tirith and destoying the ring at Mount Doom.
The live action film is very good, but I find this animated version a bit better because the music, animation and plot of the film make it seem so magical and adventurous. I like everything about this film, but I think what I like most is the friendship between Frodo and Sam. Close friendships, even pretend ones, sometimes touch me inside.
I have no complaints about this film. For anyone who likes the Lord of the Rings stories, I would very much call this film a must have for their collection.

Incredible

Incredible. I like the animated better than the realistic. Why? For one thing, the black riders are portrayed as misshapen and distorted with claws instead of hands. Also, the portrayal of their faces if terrifying.
I recommend this over other versions!

Launch Pad for Up & Coming Ringers

Great intro to the Tolkien world for kids who might be too young for the scary orcs of the Jackson movies. And not so dumbed down that grownups won't enjoy it as well.

Great songs and animation

This is a well presented late 70’s production the animation is well done and the songs are great. Also Roddy McDowell did a great job as Frodo. Great for kids and adults

The Return of the King - Animated (DVD, 2001)

A wonderful animated film from the Arthur Rankin/Jules Bass studio, the filmmakers who produced "The Hobbit" and "The Last Unicorn" animated feature films! Although this is an animated or "cartoon" adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's book of the same name, one cannot dismiss its whimsical and sentimental nature. It is a delightful little film that concludes the story begun with "The Hobbit" (also made by Rankin/Bass) and continued with Ralph Bakshi's clumsy but overlooked "The Lord of the Rings". Though the animation might seem rough in some parts, it's beautiful rendered throughout as Frodo, along with his companion, Sam, set out for Mt. Doom to destroy the One Ring, at the same time Gandalf and the Men of the West, led by Aragorn, lead their forces against Sauron's orcish horde. I totally loved it and so will your family!Read full review...
