A great read for francophiles and anyone curious about French (or how a language develops)

I love the couple that wrote this book. I read their book "Sixty-million Frenchmen Can't be Wrong" years ago, and more recently, I read their latest book, "The Bonjour Effect." I learned about this title when I was looking for "The Bonjour Effect" to borrow through inter-library loan, and marked it to read right away. I studied French in college and this is a fascinating read for me. I love languages and French in particular, so this is right up my alley. I haven't finished it yet, but so far so good. It goes a little more into history and politics than I would ordinarily like, but the French language is wrapped up in all of that so I guess it would be hard to tell the story of French without going into some of the history and political history too. Also, I should say that they don't use a ton of technical linguistic jargon that might be off putting or boring to the average reader. Right before I started this one, I read "Letter Perfect: the A-Z history of our alphabet" by David Sacks which turned out to be very helpful to understanding some of the spelling choices the French made when developing French since English and French use the same alphabet for the most part. That book is also "lay person" friendly.Read full review...
