Engrossing and beautiful...

What a wonderful book, I could not put this one down. The author not only tells a historically accurate account of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, he also weaves a very personal account told by many characters who witnessed it firsthand. His descriptions of Franklin, Tennessee in 1864 are so vivid and sharp that the reader can smell the air, taste the cornbread, and hear the popping of the guns. The main character is seen through Carrie McGavock. The reader gets a sense early on that Carrie has been carrying a secret and the price she has paid dearly for. Very suspenseful as you read about each army marching towards each other getting ready for battle. It makes you want to chew your fingernails. I for one LOVED reading this richly detailed story. It made me wishing there was more...Read full review...

Widow of the South

This is one of the best books I have read! Carrie McGavock turned the Carnton Plantation into a makeshift hospital, as the bloody Civil War of Franklin,Tenn. loomed outside her door. Years later, when she found out the burial site of the soldiers she had tried to save was going to be plowed under... she had all the dead soldiers exhumed from a nearby field and reburied on her land. Eventually 1,500 soldiers would lay at rest there. Carrie could be seen ,dressed in black, walking between the rows of graves several times a day, and into the evening, always watching over her personal cemetary and the fallen men who lay there. I think she eventually went crazy, because she became obsessed with the dead. I felt as if I was beside Carrie, as she bandaged the wounded, and held the dying.Robert Hicks is a great author.Read full review...

The Widow of the South by Robert Hicks

I thought this was a very good book except for the fact that the author used God's name in vain throughout the entire book. I read it with a pen in hand so that every time I came across that word I could scribble it out and then pray for the Lord to remove the image of that word from my mind. So, if you are like me and hate to see or hear God's name in vain, do not read this book.Read full review...

A great story. The writing stye was confusing at first but after a few chapters it started to work.

Historical Account Based on a True Story

This is the first book that I had read by the author and must say that he did a superb job of writing a novel that is both historically accurate and moving. Having enjoyed many different books written in reference to the "War between the States" I especially enjoyed "The Widow of the South" partly because it was written based on a true story and partly because it finally gives justice to the courage of the women of that era. It is filled with accurate historical events; trials and tribulations and ultimately triumph in a time when "triumph" were few and far between. If you enjoyed Cold Mountain (either the book or the movie) then this is a must read for you as I feel it is slightly a better portrayal of the time period.Read full review...

Recommended to time travelers.

Great story! Perhaps some of the facts were fictionalized, but the story of Carrie McGavock is compelling and heart-wrenching.
