Two Families, One War, One Strong Wind that Leads to War

This masterpiece penned by Herman Woulk is a tale of two families smack in the middle of the second world war as the meniecal disctator Hitler and Mussilini set forth their diabolical ideas that will eventually lead to the death of over six million human souls.

This miniseries features a mixture of real and fictional characters that are all connected to the extended family of Victor "Pug" Henry, a fictional middle-aged Naval Officer and confidant of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The story arc begins six months before Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 and ends shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
.
The Jastrow Family, a strong and proud Jewish Family making their homes in Poland, Italy and the USA. The famous author Aaron Jastrow and his niece Natalie Jastrow, (impetuous and independent and strong willed) fall in love with Byron Henry the middle child of Victor Pug Henry, a naval family who is also witnessing the state of the war. You will be reeled in as the events leads to explosive conclusion leaving both families in shambles.

AN INVESTMENT THAT WILL PAY DIVIDENDS IN YOUR SOUL !!!

I had this series on VHS format for years. I've probably watched it through 10-times or more. My VHS player died an ignoble death. Its been too many years & I'm experiencing withdrawal! So, I bought the DVD series...with WAR AND REMEMBRANCE as well. Actually, I was lucky enough to be portrayed in a scene of the latter series (Disk #10) while serving on the Battleship NEW JERSEY in 1987! This series should be "required watching"!!!Read full review...

Beware of War and Remembrance, though a few actors remain.

I love these books, Winds of War, War and Remembrance, have read them through twice and finally ordered the whole 2 mega-series to understand what people saw on T.V. Winds of War is a cinematic experience as many Reviews attest, However.

Many audiences seem to prefer a soap-opera experience. A daytime soap, where all drama is in the words and staging, none reflected in the actors. Many key actors from Winds were removed, replaced and Remembrance suffers: just when you expect a reflection of the action, "New Byron" will jump, as at a photographer's command for a Sunday Insert, fashion-department store supplement: "Say, Come to Daddy, Byron!" and he is the picture-perfect father. "New Natalie" will be presented with a new dilemma: "Oh, my, God!" she'll say, as though Madonna appeared in the wings. Terrible, hard to watch. Wouk praises both series in his new memoirs, and it is our place, not his, to reflect on just how moving these productions are; it is rare and a One-Time event they were made at all.

Winds of War, btw, exceeded my expectations and the thrill of opening the box to see the actors (I had ordered it quickly, on a hunch and finding the best bargain) was met by the moving pleasure of the rich viewing experience. Oh, War and Remembrance is OK. But Sharon Stone! Yuck.

The Winds of War--says it All!

As soon as I watched this entire movie..I knew I HAD TO HAVE IT so I could watch it over and over again. I've also shared it with family and friends. All of the characters are so amazingly real, so it's easy to "get involved in the lives and time of WW II. I believe EVERYONE should see it at least once!! All appropriate aged school kids should see this as a supplement to their history classes to make WW II hit home!Read full review...

A weekend’s worth of entertainment

I first came across this at the local library. Unfortunately this is a 7 disc set and library has rules that allow only a 4 disc maximum daily take home. This entailed watching 4 discs at one sitting, returning to the library next day for remaining 3. But well worth the time spent.

But be careful as their is another multiple disc set featuring Mitchum (I believe it’s called “War and Remembrance.” It’s OK but inferior to the other.

Winds of War

An excellent overview of the events leading to WWII. This is a drama, so the characters are fictional. However, they portray very well the events leading to and from a personal view their involvements. Gives a good understanding of how things led to WWII. This is a seven part production and each segment is about 2.5 hours long. One was over 3 hours. I never felt bored, but looked forward to watching the next episode. This was worth watching and my wife and 17 year old daughter didn't want to miss one moment.Read full review...

Winds of War. A Winner.

As a fan of Dan Curtis, and Herman Wouk, I can say this Drama is as excellent as the War and Remembrance sequel. Anyone who is interested in the Soviet side of the Great Patriotic War, and the Holocaust while the novel is a work of fiction, many of
the depictions are truthful and based on facts. If you own the sequel you owe it to your to round out your library.

Old but Good!

I just finished reading "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance," so I was interested in watching the mini-series. This was made almost 40 years ago, so the technical quality is not what we expect today, but it's a great story and an AMAZING cast. I'm extremely pleased with the purchase. Read full review...

Fantastic

Such a great series. Watched it right after reading the book, and amazed at how well it portrays the story. Locales, costumes, music, accents, are all pretty much perfect. Most scenes were just as I had imagined them as I read the novel. The casting was perfect except for Pug Henry and his wife, Rhoda. The actors did a very good job, but they seemed older than the characters in the novel. One of the best video series I have ever seen!Read full review...
