Thrillington: The Great Unknown McCartney Album

As a certified (or certifiable) Beatles fanatic of long standing, I had heard of Thrillington, but I had never actually heard it. It is basically Paul McCartney's superb Ram album, redone in instrumental form, complete with horn and string sections. Each track has a style of arranging that is distinct from other cuts, which keeps the album fresh and interesting, all the way through. Like the original Ram album, some songs are played with tongue firmly in cheek, while other tunes are played straight. Styles vary from orchestral rock to proto-disco to big-band swing to elevator Muzak to gritty R&B, and the excellent, tight band nails every arrangement.

It should be stated that Percy "Thrills" Thrillington is a strictly fictional character, not necessarily an alias for Paul, since Paul does not apparently play on the record. Nor does he provide arrangements. He obviously provided the raw material, and his adventurous, witty personality clearly provided inspiration to the arrangers, conductor, and musicians. If you love the Ram album as I do, you should really check out this CD. It does not seem to be readily available in my area of the U.S.A., so I found it on eBay.

Thrillington

I bought it simply bedause I'm a beatles fanatic, and a completist. I have to eventually get almost everything that's out there to be acquired - even if I don't expect to like it much.
I had heard about Thrillington for a long time, but I expected it to be a random collection of noises, or something really avant-garde. Instead, it's a straight ahead pop/jazz interpretation of all of the songs on Ram, and - for the most part - I have enjoyed listening to it quite a bit. Obviously, though, some tracks are better than others, but that's going to be true of any CD, of course. In all, a very good purchase, I think.Read full review...

A different side of RAM

I heard this album 15 years ago and was unable to find it. It is a unique twist on Paul McCartney's RAM album. Ram is arguably one of McCartney's best solo albums and to put it to Big Band is a riot. Monkberry Moon Delight is my personal favorite. If you are a big fan, then get this for a laugh and enjoy someone else's unique interpretation of a musical masterpiece.Read full review...
