Often Overlooked Diamond in the Rough
What started out on the Sega Dreamcast has become one of the finest franchises in one-on-one street racing...until Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 on the PS2.
This title stays true to its Dreamcast roots. Players purchase their first car, buy one or two tune-ups if left over funds allow, and then hit recreated Tokyo highways to take on battles, one-on-one, with other racers.
The graphics in this PS2 version are polished and the cars actually carry the real names of the manufacturers. Controls are tight and responsive and lean more on the arcade style rather than a simulation side; which is as it should be.
But, for a first time in TXR's history, players may find themselves battling two opponents simultaneously occasionally. This game is worth a try for those that have never played the series before. Over 200 miles of recreated Tokyo highways exist in this game and players can take exits to reach other roads in the game. The rivals in the game make up gangs that the player must defeat by staying ahead of their opponent.
Races won results in earned in-game credits that are used to buy tune-ups and more cars. Some boss battles won will reward the player with the boss' car. Most players in the past have complained that the game is entirely set at night time. This game is staying true to an actual sport that takes place in Japan which is done mainly during the night time hours.
Overall, a great one-hit wonder that is worth a place in ones PS2 game collection. It is a racing experience that is like no other.Read full review...
Best racing game for PS2
This game had more customizing options than any other PS2 car game period. Great car selection, great upgrades, and edge of your seat racing! This is the best racing game you never heard of! This is a game that is part of a Japanese racing series called Shutoku Battle, so it's set on the highways of Japan. The roads were laser scanned for extreme realism and it shows all the way down to the bumps and cracks in the road! If you enjoy this game, there are three total for PS2, then there are two Tokyo Xtreme Drift 1 & 2 games for PS2 set in the mountain roads or "Touge" of Japan. Then there are two games under different names but are from the same series, Import Tuner Challenge for the Xbox 360, and Street Supremacy for the Sony PSP, and I own them all lol. So get out there are Street Race like you mean it!Read full review...
