Know where you are going

I purchased the Tom Tom XL 350 TM GPS mostly as a toy but intended to use for finding places locally and in nearby Atlanta. I used the GPS on a recent vacation to Orlando. I live in a newer community, less that 10 years, but the GPS did not have information on my specific location but found a point in a nearby highway intersection. I suspect this is more related to the mapping information and less to the actual GPS unit specifically. Since the unit was new I jumped right in and started to program the trip. When asked about tolls rather than read the notes I just checked no! There are tolls in the Orlando area but I did not think of that at the time. A little later I'll explain why that may be important! Leading from my home to the starting point of the trip the unit was correct and actually took me on the back roads that I would have used anyway. The travel out and into Florida is fairly direct so I really did not need the know the information but was interested in how the GPS would provide directions. Upon entering the Orlando area I was directed past interstate 4 that I would normally use taking a course through downtown Orlando. I was directed to an exit that was toll and unattended. Although the amout was change I did not have exact change. I continued to the next exit thinking I may have to reverse course. Upon exiting I entered another toll road and followed directly into the Kissemee area where I wanted to be. The route was more direct and avoided the downtown traffic that would have been during the time I arrived. When I programed the GPS for a return and asked about tolls I checked yes, again not reading the small print. This time I was directed to Interstate 4 and passed the normal toll road leading back to Georgia and continued on I-4 east. I soon realized the GPS was taking me out of the way, maybe 100 miles, just to avoid about five dollars in tolls. So the point being a GPS is helpful and fun to use but you better have an idea where you are going and know something about the route. A GPS like anything else is only as good as the person or persons that made it. The mapping information it appears is older in some ways but generally consistent in providing helpbul directions. I like the touch screen of the 350 TM and how easily it is updated with a computer. This is my second GPS. I have an older unit purchased about 10 years ago and am amazed at the improvement. The 350 TM has all maps and provides much useful information along the route. The older unit only held a few mapping areas and needed to be updated frequently. I think the Tom Tom 350 XL 350 TM is reasonably priced, has lifetime map updates and traffic information. I don't need the bluetooth technology anyway so that is not something that I would pay extra form. Happy traveling but remember it is a good idea to know where you are going and don't just let this technology lead you away. Name that street

Tom worked pretty well except in cities with high buildings like Chicago. He just froze up and left us stranded until we got clear of the buildings.

If I could make one suggestion for future models, I would like to have the street names included in the voice directions. It would be very helpful to hear the name of the street , not just " turn left".

Great GPS

The TomTom XL 350TM's lifetime map and traffic updates is what initially sold me on the unit. I read many reviews on the XL350TM and found most of the early complaints, after it's release, have been corrected via online software updates to the unit. After purchasing my unit in Oct. 2010 and following directions for registering and updating, I found the website easy to work through and select the options I liked. Navigating the TomTom menus took a little getting used to compared to my old Garmin unit but that should be expected. I like how quickly it locks onto satellites and especially like the lane guidance feature which flashes arrows telling you what lanes you should be in when there are multiple exits or confusing splits in highways. The traffic side bar on the right side of the screen can be hard to see at a quick glance but so far it has pre-warned me of upcoming traffic jams on my route. I also like the traffic camera warning feature that keeps you alert and legal when approaching the cameras. Outstand quality and out of site features with an unbeatable price!!

Having been a user of several differing manufacturers of GPS products in the past, three things had become paramount in my requirements for a new GPS purchase.

#3 Being the need for a screen large enough to see comfortably to avoid having to concentrate on the map details when operating the vehicle.

#2 Being able to hear the voice guided instructions (very good indeed)without having to hit the volume adjustment to replay the instruction.

#1 Was the ability to receive and install map updates without the high costs experienced with the other units.

To my great satisfaction was the ability with the XL350TM to access free updates for life of not only the maps, but also the traffic as well!

In my opinion, this Tom Tom GPS is way above my expectations, and I have recommended the XL350TM to friends and family as well and several have purchased the same with similar commendations.

TomTom XL30T

The unit is an excellent choice for most. The screen is big enough to allow you to see everything on the unit and yet small enought that it is not distracting while you are driving. The only piece that is missing from this unit is the lifetime map updates which is included in the TM models, however you are able to purchase this upgrade through the website. The unit is very easy to use, even for first time users. The website is user friendly and is very easy to navigate. There are many uses for the unit other than just driving directions. The unit will also provide phone numbers to a buisness that you are going to in the even that you are delayed or not able to keep your appointment. I would recommend this unit to everyone and I will certianly buy from TOMTOM again if I ever need to purchase another GPS unit.Read full review...

Great price related to product performance.

I wanted a GPS device that had two critical features.
1. Free life time map upgrades.
2. Free life time traffic update.

This product delivers these two really well. I used it to travel from NJ to D.C. area recently and asked it to find a route that bypassed toll roads. It found a route that was about 1/2 hour longer than it typically takes on the NJTP and Delaware toll roads. It kept me abreast of traffic jams and reroute options keeping the time down.

TomTom XL 350T

I love this GPS! When I bought it I was looking to upgrade my Magellan. I would recommend TomTom any day! I really like the way that I have the option to change the maps and the voices. I really love the fact that I can change the maps for FREE on TomTom home! Right now, my maps are pink :). I also love the feature it has where changes to night time view when it is dark (and keeps the pink maps). It isn't had driving at all at night with this GPS, or in the day for that matter. I was worried about it leaving a glare on my windshield at night...but it doesn't! Thanks to the night time view! That is something my Magellan didn't have! Great product

The Tom Tom device was easy to use. The Tom Tom was a great value. The Tom Tom has works awesomely great. I plan on using it on my trip to Mexico, I hope that it will help me get around as well as it is helping me get around my neck of the woods. I would one day love to take a cross country journey without any papermaps. One of my bucketlist adventures reserved for my retirement.
