Fine Space Opera

Well written and engrossing story following the activities of members of "The Astral Force," the deep space navy of the not so far future. The first we are introduced to is the commander of a small ground unit in what appears the equivalent of a USMC deep-reconnaissance force. The commander of the ship, a small attack vessel that delivers the unit and picks them up. A cowardly intelligence officer whose career and personal future are more important to her than her ship, her comrades or her planet. And a pilot-specialist.
The book follows their careers as they all start out as near equals policing far off colonies to their involvement as the victims of a sneak attack, heroism and cowardice and political maneuvering all combine to make this a fascinating read.
Excellent battle scenes with riveting descriptions puts you right into the action.
The first of as series the science of FTL space flight, "jump gates" for instantaneous transport from one part of the galaxy to another and weaponry quite similar to today's projectile weapons make for an understandable future.
