Allies Prisoners make daring escape via a train ~ 4 STARS VERY good ~

PLOT: The Italian's surrendering has the allied prisoners making a desperate escape on a train. GREAT plot.

As the Allies invade Italy ...Italy surrenders. The Nazi's decided this is not acceptable and move to take over the country. In an Allied camp the new arrived....American Colonel Ryan American "arrives" and takes over from the shabby Brits who have been busy tunneling. They make a prison camp break and end up ON a Nazi controlled train headed to Germany. The industrious Ryan soon kills one Nazi at a time to "take over" the train. Edward Mulhare is excellent as the "padre" who speaks fluent German and helps the train head to Switzerland via the alps. This is both entertaining and fun. Frank Sinatra is the 90 day wonder American Ryan who is very resented by the Brits ....Trevor Howard is excellent as the Brit in charge. The train "escape" is excellent and this starts slow in the camp but gives the feel of the change of fate in the Italian War....I give this one 4 STARS for excellent acting and plot that is implausible but entertaining.Read full review...

Vintage war film

This is an old-fashioned war film, lacking the graphic realism of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN or SCHINDLER'S LIST. In other words, no mangled body parts, no nudity, & no blood. When someone gets shot, they fall to the ground and die immediately without screaming or bleeding. Young people may find this too tame; furthermore, except for the ending, VON RYAN'S EXPRESS makes war look like a thrilling adventure. Frank Sinatra is perfectly cast as the American colonel who matches wits with an Italian POW camp director and the Nazis. This film is all fun and games until someone gets hurt. If you liked THE GREAT ESCAPE, you'll like VON RYAN'S EXPRESS. As an example of film-making in the days when a compelling story relied on acting ability rather than realistic gore, this one is excellent.Read full review...
