A Field Guide to the Tiger Beetles of U.S. and Canada
Many years ago, while collecting rattlesnakes and insects in western Oklahoma, I was thrilled to find specimens of the Great Plains Giant Tiger Beetle. Since then, I developed a passion for tiger beetles and have chased them from here to Malaysia. There is difficulty in identifying most insects with certainty, due to their extreme biodiversity, but this book is a much-needed volume that permits the reader (collector) to clearly identify their finds. Distribution maps and other information contribute to the satisfaction of species determination. The determination keys, illustrated as necessary, are flawless and definite. Additionally, the volume is much more than an identification guide, with excellent discussions on observation, ecology, behavior and conservation. The only improvement that I can imagine would be a spiral bound rendition that would allow the book pages to lie flat when coparing beetles to the images.
