Excellent addition to the double gun library.
Although perhaps not the wordsmith equal of his contemporary, Michael McIntosh, Richard Grozik has written a compelling and entertaining work. If for no other reason than the excellent photographs and fine production, sportsmen would do well to add this book to their shooting library. The author's anecdotes and observations on the history and making of fine double guns is entertaining and informative. Recommended without hesitation.

Well written history of the Best Gun family and business.
If you are expecting a glorified sales brochure, think again. This is " the true gen " and an astonishingly revealing and impressive work. It many parts it reads like a novel and more than once I found myself emotionally involved. If you think Purdey's and the family have had an easy go in life and business, this excellently written work reveals how false that impression is. They have earned every accolade the old fashioned way; hard work.
While every Best Gun enthusiast should have this volume on their shelf, even those who have no interest in firearms will find this history of Purdey's well worth their time. More than guns are involved in this fascinating tale of family, society, business, war, technology, triumph, tragedy and survival in an ever changing world.
Highly recommend.

A lot of smarts for a cheap price.
1 of 1 found this helpful Some of this book's material is a bit dated as it was published in 2001. However, as a ready reference source, especially for those new to shotguns and shotgun history, sports, etc., it's well worth the modest purchase price. My total was $5.01 and it is worth every penny. Sorry, I make a little joke. In addition, although my copy was listed as a former library book, it was in excellent unmarked condition; pretty much brand new.
The Shotgun Encyclopedia is cheaper than most gun magazines on the newstand and has far more information. Spend an evening with it and you'll be a better informed and knowledgable sportsman than most.
