    Top Quality Pro Canon SLR
I love my Nikon F4s pro SLR, but I haven't touched it much since I purchased the Canon EOS 1N. As much as I love film photography, I am spoiled by digital single-lens reflex cameras. The Canon EOS 1N works very similarly to a pro DSLR, much the same as my Canon EOS 1Ds DSLR. It's rugged yet elegant, easy to use, especially for a pro SLR. When I go out on a typical Voyage of Photography (and I've produced seven books of that title to date) I usually shoot both digital and film images. The Canon EOS 1N makes me so comfortable that for the first time in more than a decade, I have gone out with ONLY a film SLR. Coupled with a Canon EF II 50mm f/1.8 (or other prime lens) the EOS 1N produces fantastic images. The Canon EOS 1NRS and the Canon EOS 1V are newer pro film SLRs, but they cost a fortune. The EOS 1N doesn't, and as a pro with more than 35 years experience, I have no complaints with it at all.

Great old Mac PowerBook, especially for the money.
Despite its somewhat tainted reputation and "Compromised Mac" status (see Low End Mac's report: http://lowendmac.com/roadapples/5300.shtml), the PowerBook 5300cs/100 is a good little pre-G3 computer. It's small, relatively light and has a great keyboard. It also has a diskette drive, which helps if one has a lot of old diskettes to use or transfer to a modern computer. It works easily on an AppleTalk serial network, although it does not have Ethernet capabilities. I purchased this PowerBook to add to my collection. The price generally is relatively low, so if you need an old Mac laptop, this is a good model to get.

Choose a different film Nikon SLR
I started collecting Nikon film cameras because I always wanted them when I was a teenager, but couldn't afford them. Since everyone wants digital cameras and is getting rid of their film cameras, I started accumulating Nikons. Every one of them I have purchased, even the lowly N60, keep up the Nikon tradition in most ways. They are sturdy, work-through-anything cameras. Even the company's consumer Nikkormat SLRs are great workhorses. Not so with the Nikon EM. It is so obviously cheaply made and functions so rarely it should not have the Nikon name on it. It has a terrible film wind crank that breaks easily. The meter is inaccurate at best. I really thought it was just that I got an abused EM first, so I bought a second EM camera body. While it functions better, it still is a cheaply made camera. I was never one for Canon SLRs, but if you want a fully automatic film SLR without much control over exposure, the Canon AE1 Program is better built. So is the Pentax ME Super. I have both of these and they are far superior consumer-level cameras. If you truly want a Nikon — as many people including myself do — spend a little more and get a Nikon FE or FM or a Nikkormat.
