How the New Yorker lost its way
The author is a writer who was a respected member of the New Yorker's staff during the Shawn era. She describes in accurate detail how the magazine once worked and stood for, and how in recent years what had long been the leading independent voice of the magazine became, under new middle-of-the-road commercial-friendly ownership, just another magazine -- weakened, commercialized. Both its independent views and fun are gone, along with its leadership position in contemporary issues. Even the cartoons have lost their punch. Some don't notice the change, but it's fundamental and the loss of this voice marks the end of an era. Excellent historical reporting!

Classic small solar calculator
The TI 307 was one of the first small hand-held solar calculators, and I bought my original one in the 1990s. It is flat, has clear small numbers (but no complex math functions), and rests on the paper right next to where I add up numbers. It works so well I've ordered two more so I have one handy everywhere in the house. Just put it on a sunny windowsill if some of the numbers don't read clearly. Recommended!

Handy do-almost-everything saw
The Gomboy saws are excellent, and replacement blades are too. The tool is wel-designed, portable, fits in a pocket, and the blace stays sharp a long time. Reccommended!
