An Inexpensive Luxury Sports Car
3 of 3 found this helpful I love my 1999 Saab 9-3. I purchased this car because I was looking for a second car that is sporty (mine is a convertible and a 5-speed), has front wheel drive, and gets good gas mileage. The only downside is the price of "Saab only" replacement parts. Another issue is the "Pixel" problems that you see on most Saab's that have the SID (Saab Information Display), and the digital ACC (Automatic Climate Control). Several people have reported missing pixels on these units. Fortunately, there are companies that have a permanent fix for these units. I did see one auction on eBay where a company will repair the SID and ACC units for a price, but they ensure a permanent fix. For instance, I checked with my local Saab dealer and they wanted $650.00 for a new SID. That does not include the price to program the dealer purchased SID to your specific Saab vehicle. Only the Saab dealer can program the new SID as the tool needed to do so is not cheap, the tool costs somewhere around $5,000 from what I've read. There are several foreign auto repair shops around. Lucky for me that I have a great friend that owns his own foreign auto repair shop and all he does is repair high end foreign vehicles. However, there are many repairs that you can do on your own. There are a few "Saab forums" on the internet where you can register and ask questions. There may be something you repaired on your own and could answer their repair or general question(s) for a fellow Saab owner. I see it as more of a club than a forum. If you have a check engine light that's on, go to Advance Auto Parts, have the clerk download the fault codes for you and write them down. Then do an internet search on those codes to narrow down the source of the problem. It would be customary to purchase any replacement part(s) from Advance Auto Parts since they saved you anywhere from $50 - $100 on a basic check engine light diagnostic fee. eBay has been highly instrumental for me on being able to locate used parts for the best price. This can be true for any vehicle. It can be cheaper to buy used parts on eBay rather than visiting your local salvage yard. Not trying to discourage taking business from your neighbor, but this provides a more fair and honest price for your needed replacement part. Sometimes you will even find brand new parts right here on eBay that someone purchased and found out that the part was not needed for the same price as used, if not lower. Overall, I give the Saab 9-3 a THUMBS UP!
