Shoulder to Shoulder
This is a companion book to Goggles and Dust and is in every way just as enjoyable.
The book opens with an introduction about cycling during the time of Anduetil's reign, the passing from Coppi's era and the impact of Anquetil's contribution to the sport. Unlike its predecessor this book closes with a notes section that expands on the images throughout the book.
As in Goggles & Dust, the images are incredibly clean, clear and crisp. The captions are concise and to the point and portray a true sense of the times. Many images are shown for the first time. This is the era of Anquetil before Merckx and the redefining of athletics in general in European society. Anquetil was a mercurial athlete who forever changed the face of his sport.
The book centers primarily on the 60's and the images show every manner of cycling from the times. There are some incredible action images contained here.
I highly recommend both books and I hope the Horton collection will continue to release more selections from its vast inventory of prints and negatives.
I hope you've found this review helpful.

Jaco dvd
This is a two disc dvd review that was released in late 2015 that was produced by Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and directed by Paul Marchand and Stephen Kijak.
Disc one is the full length film with Dolby 5.1 surround design by Weather Report's Brian Risner. Disc two features extras, out takes, anecdotes and stories with more than 25 never-before-seen interviews.
I was pleasantly happy after viewing this dvd release. The first disc is the real gem here and is worth the purchase alone. There has been much written about John Francis Pastorius lll over the years and we know all too well about his demise and the later part of his troubled life.
The first disc is refreshing and sheds new light on Jaco's early life and development. This biopic contains incredible unseen footage and photography from the Pastorius family archive. In it the viewer gleans an even greater appreciation of this musical genius. From humble and innocent beginnings, thru adolescence into adulthood, marriage, fatherhood and finally his untimely death, this is the truest picture of completeness concerning Jaco ever offered to the public.
I found everything about the first disc truly captivating. It's a journey thru Jaco's life from beginning to end but told and portrayed in a manner unlike ever presented.
The second disc was a bit of a letdown but only because I would have liked to have seen more interviews from those who actually knew and worked with Jaco throughout his development, up to Weather Report and his solo efforts. However, don't let this dissuade you because there are some very revealing moments.
I took from this a much better appreciation for the man and his music than I'd had before. If Jaco possessed the bipolar illness in his early life that consumed him later, it's certainly not portrayed that way. That stage of his life is portrayed from an empathetic perspective that is quite deeply moving. Jaco seemed to want nothing more than to be the consummate sideman in his musical odyssey.
I once took drum lessons from a drummer that spent a small window of time with Jaco in the C C Riders. He said Jaco never drank, smoked or partied in those days and sent most all of his earnings home to Tracy. Jaco would practice in the bathroom of the tour bus in the early morning hours while everyone was asleep. He would wedge his bass between the walls of the bathroom for resonance and have at it.
I hoped you enjoyed the review and found it helpful.

Goggles & Dust
If you enjoy cycling history this is a very nice, if albeit small, book of fantastic images from a bygone era. The Horton collection comprises over a hundred-thousand images from cycling's past and were collected over many years.
The book opens with a very informative introduction and goes on to explain the history behind the Horton collection and its acquisition of prints and negatives. The images are fantastically clear, clean and surprisingly crisp for black and white prints and negatives.
The book centers primarily on a period from the 20's into the late 30's but includes a few images prior to WW 1. The captions are simple and to the point and the images show cyclists in all manner of competition, commraderrie, pre and post race action. The book conveys a true sense of the chivalry and heroism of the times.
This is the era of dirt roads, heavy bicycles without derailleur's, heavy wool clothing, no rider support and races of much longer distances than today.
If you're a fan or a follower of the sport this book is very enjoyable and I highly recommend it.
